Gay rights should include more than marriage.  This is good to hear.

Hatch's support definitely comes as a surprise to me.

Not really, he backed civil union this year!

This.  I doubt it will come to the floor.  If it does......down in flames.

Doesn't this new version basically gut protections for trans* Americans?

Hopefully this doesn't make it to the floor, no need to make Democrats in conservative states make a tough vote.

Hey, at least it's something. And "gutting" implies that there were protections to begin with: if the current version is passed it won't hurt trans* people (yes, yes, we need to help them, but we can't do everything at once with this Congress).

What's the point of holding office if you're to afraid to implement any of your ideas?

You'll hear a lot of, "I have no problem with gay people. This is about protecting America's small business owners from this draconian, burdensome regulation!"

If ENDA can pass the House, it can't pass the Senate. If ENDA can pass the Senate, it can't pass the House.

I wonder when people will do something about this conundrum?

Probably never. Wasn't really a priority 2009-2011, was it?

If ENDA could actually pass the House, then of course I would want the Senate to pass it.  However, ENDA is dead on arrival in the House.  There's no reason to endanger Senator just to make an effectively symbolic vote.

ENDA is not a remotely dangerous vote for a Democrat to take in 2013, even in places like Louisiana and Arkansas. It polls off the charts throughout the country. Most people think it's already the law of the land.

I'm skeptical House leadership will allow a vote on this, but they did put VAWA up for a vote after enough public pressure mounted. It would pass the House if put up for a vote - there's more than enough Northeast and California Republicans for it to get to 218.

This is a piss poor outlook. And not just on gay rights, but for ANY political issue. "Why force our elected officials to take a position on current issues? That may be their job, but it might HURT them!" Get out of here with that noise.

Heller supports it, too.

Its not looking likely in the House, because civil rights are, you know, 'frivolous.'

January 2015, when Speaker Nancy Pelosi brings it up. Of course you know what I assume!

Given the current state of the House, the point of this bill is to hold Senate Republicans' feet to the fire and watch them squirm. Even here in the South, workplace legal protections are popular.  And it couldn't happen to a more unpleasant political party.

Yeah, ENDA isn't remotely controversial, it polls far higher than marriage equality.  It says a lot about the GOP that they're running against it.

The fact that even Orrin Hatch (and the entire state of Utah for that matter) supports it is telling. He used to be the standard for "how conservative can we get".

It's also telling that most people think a law like this is already in effect, even though it isn't.

This is good to hear and I commend the Republican senators who are taking a brave vote, but does anybody know if this bill applies to only the private sector or also the public sector?
