Should the Washington Redskins change their name?

Personally I think it should be changed. Redskins is and always has been a racist term, regardless of the context the organization says the name comes from.

Hhhmmm... I am the only "no opinion"?  Redskins defenders constantly throw up polls showing the majority of Native Americans don't care about the name.  So it's hard for me to go crazy about it.  At the same time I understand where the Native Americans that are offended come from.

I'm just glad I don't have to sort that one out.

But yes, it should be changed. Through NFL pressure, rather than government pressure - we don't have hate speech laws in this country.

Yes. They would have already been sued and legally forced to change their name if it was the Washington Wetbacks or something like that. They don't even need to change their logo. They can just change it to the Bravehearts or Braves or something.

The fascinating thing is that many of the people (not necessarily the ones on this  thread, but in the real world) who say that it's fine to change the name as long as the government doesn't force it, will be the same who shriek the loudest about liberals ruining America if the team decides to change.

If the free market causes a name change rather than government intervention, conservatives should claim victory.  But most of them will howl defeat instead...
