I think Georgia.  it's a close one, but I think Georgia is more socially liberal on account of a major metropolitan area such as Atlanta.  West Virginia to me is Eastern Kentucky.

This isn't even complicated. Which one has major universities and cities over 500K people?

I've seen it listed that WV has the most strip clubs per capita of any state (though for all I know ND may lead that list now), and I'd expect WV to legalize marijuana before Georgia.  Despite metro Atlanta, I'd go WV.

Georgia, despite Southern and Northern Georgia. Georgia generally has a growing, younger crowd that is going to be more socially liberal than not. That crowd hasn't taken over Georgia (or anything close to take over) but there are simply more of them than in West Virginia. West Virginia is generally an older, whiter, and non-growing state that has shown almost no progress towards any liberal policies.

Obama did much worse among Georgia whites than among West Virginia whites.  That doesn't mean everything, but WV still has more whites willing to vote Democratic, and WV has historically not been as racist.  In additon, a large black population does not help make Georgia more pro-gay or less religious.  Also, rural does not automatically mean socially conservative (look at Vermont).

True, Georgia is trending that way, and West Virginia is not, but I think it's a close call now.

It is, and I'm not really going off evidence but more of recent trends. I think even though West Virginia whites are more democratic, a vast abundance of them are socially conservative voters who elect conservative democrats to statewide offices and legislatures.

Georgia has both Atlanta and Athens, which could, to some degree, be considered "socially liberal". The only major city in WV where I could see this label being applied would be Morgantown, and even that's a bit of a toss-up.

Georgia it is.

Most here think Georgia, probably because of Atlanta.  I agree that in the future it will obviously be Georgia; the growing diversity will eventually impact the state's social and political character, while heavily-rural West Virginia is trending more conservative relative to other parts of the country.

However, I still think that rural Georgia is obviously more socially conservative than rural West Virginia.

Georgia has cities like Atlanta, Athens, ect.

West Virginia only really has Charleston, which is about as conservative as the rest of the state.

If a vote on gay marriage was held in Georgia and West Virginia. I'd expect around 45% support in Georgia, but only ~30% in West Virginia.

That's not very realistic, I agree around 30% in West Virginia, but I would only expect a little more in Georgia, around 35%. (Blacks don't overwhelmingly support SSM just because they vote overwhelmingly democratic).

There may be a larger percentage of white Democratic voters in West Virginia than in Georgia, but you can be sure that pretty much all of the white Obama voters in Georgia are socially liberal whereas you can't say the same for West Virginia.

And don't assume that all of Georgia's African Americans are socially conservative. Atlanta has a ton of young, successful cosmopolitan black people who are very socially liberal. Atlanta is the black gay capital of America after all....

By the end of the decade Berkeley/Jefferson (Federal WV) will probably pass Charleston (Kanawha) in population.  They're both somewhat most socially liberal than the rest of the state.

This is close to what I think too, but Nate Silver projects that WV is more liberal.

I think we need to ask the truckers which state has more prostitutes.

There are myriad ways to do this. Tooth loss is highly correlated with conservatism. So too is an affinity for clogging - not to mention blood measurements for levels of banjo appreciation. West Virginia is much more conservative than George given these useful metrics.

And yet Deliverance was filmed in Georgia.  discuss.

West Virginia. While it is becoming more socially conservative relative to the country than it once was, many people seem to be misinterpreting it as hostility to the political views of social liberalism when it isn't; it's hostility to the projection of social conservatives as backwoods redneck idiots. It comes down to the understanding that they're the butt of the joke rather than some distant Republican businessman.

Avatar was filmed on Earth.  That doesn't mean it wasn't really about blue aliens halfway across the galaxy that ph-cked with their tails.
