I remember reading that after narrowly winning the statehouse for the GOP in '98 for the first time in 30+ years (accurate?), he was one of the super star governors throughout his first term.  Then, after winning an impressive 62% for re-election in 2002, he lost his luster and by the end of his term, he was actually one of the lesser popular governors in America.

I know that he was very conservative to say the least, but I don't remember much in terms of scandal, etc. that would have torn him apart.

May we discuss?

From what I just read up on, he angered conservatives somewhat by working with more liberal legislators to fix a budget problem. I'm not sure if that was it, though.

Seems like he was an intelligent, well-meaning guy who wasn't very politically adept or good with public relations.

I think the only guy who could mimic Owens as a moderate is Brophy that's running in 2014 on the R ticket.

He's doing a brilliant job positioning himself as an independent which still a conservative record for the base. The exact type of candidate CO needs to unite the right in an election for once.
