Since it hasn't been done yet... Under modern circumstances, Washington would probably be the Republican candidate and Lincoln the Democrat's. Maps?

Are you just voting for Washington because I made him the Republican candidate?

Better question: will the Democrats still insist Virginia is a swing state?

Washington would be a Republican-leaning independent. Federalists were pro-industry, pro-military, etc. He'd be a lot like General Franks.

I'm not so sure Lincoln would be a Democrat.

I know, but given the present circumstances, and the fact that they can't (or shouldn't) both be Republicans, I just thought he would be closer of the two.

Don't forget, the Federalists are were also pro-big government.

Good point. But the Federalists were the equivalent of a conservative party whereas the original Republican was much more moderate than its current incarnation.

I think Lincoln would be a libertarian-leaning Democrat, and Washington a libertarian-leaning Republican.

True, but big government is a relative term.

But the Federalists were the equivalent of a conservative party whereas the original Republican was much more moderate than its current incarnation.

The Jeffersonian Republicans would be anti-government radicals today.

I'd vote Washington, but Lincoln would win (assuming their legacies are known).

Hard to say. Lincoln was worried about corporations having too much power.

Lincoln would NOT be libertarian leaning.  He suspended the writ of habeas corpus, and imprisoned many people who simply spoke out against the civil war.  There was a draft to recruit people to fight in the civil war. There was also an income tax levied only during the civil war years, and there government spending for the war skyrocketed. In a way, he sowed the seeds for future leaders to grow government limitlessly Based on this I have to say Washington gets my vote.
