I did, and I had to do a complete system reset to my computer.  The guy at the service center I went to said they are seeing an average of one system crash a day because of Windows 8.1.  And that's just one store!  Stay away from 8.1, it doesn't work.

What do you even gain from it? I updated my PC at work, mainly for the benefit of my co-workers (I'd been led to believe it was reverting back to classic Windows setup), and after all this chew setting up an email account for it, and a user account with a mandatory password that I didn't want, the only thing that ended up changed was I set a tick box in the taskbar properties to boot to desktop (which you could achieve by simply pressing the start button anyway). Waste of the two hours.

Same problem for me, I also couldn't connect to the internet unless I did it wirelessly, 8.1 sucks.

Still using Windows Vista here.  By the time I was ready to consider getting a replacement system, Windows 8 was out and I've heard nothing good about it.  I'd been hoping the update would be worth it, but it appears not.

Still using XP. I don't think that Windows 8 was designed for normal PCs.

If I buy a Windows 8 machine, it will be a tablet/laptop hybrid. Otherwise I feel like the few "pros" of the OS would go to waste.

I set it aside for some reason and now I'm glad I did, many thanks for the memo.

As long as you have either a desktop or a laptop, the latest version you should have is a Windows 7.  If you want a Windows 8, you'd be well-advised to get a tablet.

This is disheartening. My parents have been complaining to me incessantly about how they need a new computer (all the PCs in their house are mid-2000s stuff running XP) but they keep hearing that Windows 8 is terrible and they don't want a Mac because they already have one and need a PC to run some of the programs my mom uses for work.

Yes.  They're even still getting updates.  IE 11 is supposed to be out for it soon (or may even already be out).
