Now if only we could pull this off on the national stage...

Americans were shocked to learn that Herman Cain is actually of Scotch-Irish origin.

I guess usually Republicans don't lie about their race to win an election, but they lie about nearly everything else, so why not?

Deceptive, yes, but this says more about how little information voters go to the polls with for way-down-the-ballot races like this and calls into question why we really need to have popular elections for things like the East Jameson County Board of Water Maintenance Supervisors and whatnot.

I mean it's kind of upsetting to me that people in the article seem to more or less be saying "If I hadn't thought he was black, I wouldn't have voted for him."

This is where I stopped reading.  If you put a gun to the head of every adult in Houston and asked them to name one member on that board I'm sure the majority couldn't.

Also Houston local elections are non partisan.

I mean it's kind of upsetting to me that people in the article seem to more or less be saying "If I hadn't thought he was black, I wouldn't have voted for him."

What other criteria would you use for a nonpartisan community college board election in Houston?

Oh, I don't doubt that. It's just a point of amusement, that's all.

I agree with everybody else, this is very funny and what's the point of electing dog catchers and such?

I find voting unsettling.  Unless I am doing a straight Dem ticket I leave a lot of stuff blank because I don't even know what the job is let alone who's running for it.  The BS civics classes don't prepare us for this stuff.  I wish they would bring in a ballot to school and explain these are the jobs in our town.  They never do that.

He could have lied and said they were pictures of all the black friends he has that prove he's not racist.

I mean it's kind of upsetting to me that people in the article seem to more or less be saying "If I hadn't thought he was black, I wouldn't have voted for him."

We had our local school board elections last Tuesday along with everything else. Honestly, I just voted for the people whose signs I saw. No clue who they were, if they were the incumbent or anything else.

Which is exactly why I don't think positions like those should be elected to begin with.

Texas seems to have a particular problem with this, though.

The Democrats nominated a guy named Gene Kelley for US Senate several years ago who spent no money and did no campaigning and beat several actual politicians; most people agree it was because people confused him with the mid-20th century actor/dancer.

We also had a Democratic attorney general candidate named Sam Houston and for several years the state treasurer was a man named Warren G. Harding.

You also have politicians like Trey Fischer who changed his name to Trey Martinez Fischer (Martinez is is Hispanic mother's maiden name) because he was worried he couldn't get elected as a Democrat in San Antonio as an Anglo.

This is basically the exact opposite of what Herman Cain tried to do in 2012.

EDIT:

Now if only we could pull this off on the national stage...

Americans were shocked to learn that Herman Cain is actually of Scotch-Irish origin.

Lol.  Now that made me laugh.  If some guy whose idea of a good time is hanging out on a politics forum is doing stuff like that you have to wonder what the general public is doing.

I just feel bad just randomly choosing people.  The Dem straight ticket is bad enough.

Well I'm just glad I'm not alone in being clueless.  It kind of reminds me of the primary election issue.  I've NEVER voted in a primary if it wasn't for president.  If there is no incumbent it is a gaggle of people you've never heard of.  And even if you know one person who is to say one of the three other people isn't better?  I just stay away from those things.

Not sure whats more pathetic.....

The fact that this POS ran pulling stunts like that and won

or

The fact that the racist people in his district voted based on a few words and the color of the people on the pamphlets skin.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

I'm just glad I live in a country where people are busy enough they neither have the time nor inclination to put that much thought into a community college board election.

The guy he beat was a 24 year incumbent.  I doubt anyone even paid attention to that office for a solid two decades.

I doubt anybody voted for him because they thought him the Black candidate in the race. Cause, you know, Bruce Austin is Black and I doubt he was putting out campaign literature on which he lied about his race, too.
People may rather have voted for the non-incumbent Black candidate (possibly having heard something bad about the Community College's current board), or the Black candidate that actually bothered to mail them (the direct equivalent of what independentTX did). Neither of which is the same thing, but both of which far fewer people would have done for a White guy mailing them Conservative-looking flyers.

Yes, the elected official here declined to state his race. Presumably he was elected based on the content of his character.
