Patrick Buchanan by a narrow margin. He was alot meaner then Dole in 1996 and he would have been able to debate Clinton and win.

He would lose worse than Dole...and I might have to support Clinton unless Perot ran.

Dear God... it's like the candidates you'd have if you went to Hell.

Once again, Canada.

Look at the margins as they where in 1996... Clinton came very close to a Reagan style sweep!...with Buchanan he would probably have done it!... The Republican Party would probably have had an acrimonious 1-2 years after such a defeat however majorities in both the senate and the house would have prevented any real crisis and you would probably have had a very moderate (or someone campaigning as a very moderate) Republican winning the nomination with aura of electability... however after that it is quite possible that Gore would receive a greater boost from Clinton then he did... however lets remember that Gore did have the brilliant strategy of distancing himself from the popular incumbent Smiley in 2000 so he could do it again, so any positive impact from this kinda Clinton sweep in 1996 would probably be minimal...

Buchanan was one of those crazy, gay-bashing conservatives who would only get out the extreme hard-core belivers for him right? Cinsdiering how easy Clinton won in real life, Buchanan would've been a soft target I think.

It most likely would of been like Goldwater in 1964. Alan keyes and Steve Forbes would have been pounded in even worse.

Buchanan would have lost big league. But maybe the bumper likes to write a TL.

LOL at the grave digging.

Buchanan would have crushed Clinton in the debates. He has a very good sense of humor, which he'd surely employ in relation to Bill's bimbo eruptions. He wouldn't have won (not in 1996), but he'd outpoll Dole for sure.
