Opinion of "Proud Americans" who display the Confederate flag

some guy had it displayed prominently in his yard about a half mile from my house.  strange to see in NY, but, hey, whatever floats your boat.  I don't view it much more negatively than someone who displays a USA flag.

The Confederate flag needs to be illegal, like the Nazi flag in Germany.

I think that's going a little far, but yeah.  I can't say I have a very high opinion of someone who proudly flies the Confederate flag from their porch.

They are ignorant white supremacist morons who probably don't even realize the consequences of wearing such an insulting symbol. That being said, banning it is a violation of freedom of speech, but one of the worst political positions in modern-day politics to claim, "the government is violating is violating freedom of speech! They can't force us to be political correct!" and then turn around and support bullish*t like censorship and gay pride flags, which are blatant violations of freedom of speech and basic human rights in general.

I'm not losing sleep over some morons flying a flag of a nation that ceased to exist about a hundred and sixty years ago.  Maybe have a little chuckle at it, thinking of how much of an icebreaker that would be when meeting minorities.  But not much else.

Which isn't to say this is a flag people should proudly display.  IT IS NOT.

There are folks in and around town here who fly the stars and bars, or the Gadsen flag depending on their preferences. It makes me feel apprehensive and nervous. Though I see that as prejudiced and probably irrational so far as responses go, there is a part of me that seems to immediately identify the symbols as expressions of hate and open threat against opponents - not as symbols of benign fondness for a particular culture of bygone era in American history.

On the other hand, I could understand why reactionaries and some conservative folk might feel the same way about me if I ever get around to putting up a red banner.
