His reelection margin in 1994 was the highest in Massachusetts history. Or would his relocation to New York in recent years and his time out of office hurt his chances?

I guess he could on paper, but he'd never get past a primary.

Maybe if Coakley implodes, but for now he's at a clear disadvantage.

Coakley does have the skills to lose as a Democrat in Massachusetts, so possibly.

Weld can be whatever he wants in MA, just not what he wants--Mr. Senator.

He endorsed Obama in 08, I really doubt he can win a Republican Primary in Vermont.

Not really. According to PPP 74% of people had an opinion of him two months ago, ab smidge less recognized than Markey himself.

Other than the primary and the general, he'd be a shoe-in.

Not in a Republican primary electorate anywhere, for gods sake.

Weld's time has come and gone and folks will remember how he BAILED on MA after resigning from the governorship in 1997.

He couldn't even get an ambassadorship because Jesse Helms filibustered the nomination to death due to his hatred of Clinton, etc.,

Paul Cellucci resigned in the middle of his term too to become Bush's Ambassador to Canada.

He's no more "RINO" than Scott Brown, so sure.

Come to think of it, when was the last time a conservative won a statewide race in Massachusetts?

Gubernatorial - 2002 (Romney)
Senatorial - Not counting Brown's 2010 special election win, 1972 (Edward Brooke)

Uh, Ed Brooke was an incredibly liberal Republican, not a conservative one. And Romney certainly never ran nor governed as a conservative in Massachusetts.

My bad, while I know Romney is NOT a conservative, I was merely pointing out the last MA Republican statewide wins. Thanks for that, and for the information on Brooke too.

He could try to pull a (Jerry) Brown, although California is much more hospitable to Democrats than Massachusetts is to Republicans.

His interest in running for Governor of New York might hurt him, especially if Scott Brown runs for Senate in New Hampshire, an even that would highlight Weld's ambitions.

I'd assume state Republicans like the idea that they kept the Governor's mansion for 16 years starting with Weld. Although Baker would be a strong primary opponent.

I haven't heard any new developments on Weld seeking the MA governorship again, but Baker has to be considered the favorite.

Depending on if voters want to give the GOPers a chance at the Corner Office in Beacon Hill after 8 years of Patrick.

When Patrick first won the governorship in 2006, I've always maintained he was a two-termer and would leave after that. Looks like I was right on that one.

He could possibly defeat Coaxley if he somehow won the Republican nomination for governor.
