An assault weapons ban is both blatantly unconstitutional and is a useless waste of political capital considering assault weapons kill only about a hundred individuals a year (of the several thousands gun related deaths in the US). Its just popular because the high-profile slaughter of suburban schoolchildren occurs with these weapons while the far more common murder of inner city children occurs daily with handguns.

The assault weapons ban is not 'common sense'; even if a comprehensive gun ban is 'common sense' (which it is, but you can't get away with saying that in American politics) only banning what are defined as 'assault weapons' is essentially an arbitrary mess.
