Actually, I sort of think of Schumacher as a German version of you, politically.  A staunchly socialist ideology wrapped in the flag of his country.

This surprises me.  It doesn't seem to me like the FDP platform would provide a natural home for ex-Nazis, is there any particular reason for this?

It's quite bizarre.  I guess it was the only major party which would take them (though there were also plenty in the CDU, though they did more to pretend they weren't guilty of collaborating with the regime).

I suspect a lot of this is people voting for he current FDP, i.e. socially liberal right wingers. If you made a modern German election with CDU/CSU, SPD, FDP and KPD, the results would be pretty similar I imagine.
