Article.

Former Governor Ben Cayetano, apparantly considered an Abercrombie ally before, is endorsing state legislator David Ige in the primary. Ariyoshi is also backing Ige, but I think that's much less surprising.

Not that I know of. Pollsters including PPP probably have a hard time and can't be bothered to go island hopping polling people whether they would vote for Abercrombie or Ige in the primary, but it's first come first serve because really any poll at this point will help.

Any word on who Waihee is supporting though? I'm kind of shocked Ariyoshi would announce his endorsement, but his own former Lt. Governor wouldn't.

But President Obama trumps these former Democratic governors, so Abercrombie will be fine

What's their reasoning for supporting the primary challenger; do they just not like Abercrombie?

The old school Asian faction of the Hawaii Democratic party has never liked Abercrombie, e.g, Inouye tried to get Hanneman into the primary against Abercrombie in 2010.

Huh. Coming from a very white state like Utah, I don't understand ethnic politics, though I do like diversity within politics.

Same, except in my state we have a lot more women in politics.

FTR, I think voters will come home to Ige, but if Hanabusa went for this seat instead of the Senate, I'd support her. Her hawkishness is nearly irrelevant as Governor.

Yeah, she's pretty hawkish. TBH pre-2010 Hanabusa kind of reminds me of you.

Perfect! I didn't know she was hawkish. I knew she was relatively progressive on economic issues and moderate on social issues, that's why I support her. But the fact that she's hawkish is a bonus! I really can't stand Schatz, too "left libertarian".

Can this thread be changed into "Hawaii Gubernatorial Election 2014"?

Anyway, I do hope that Ige wins. And I'm sure it will be a close race.

If only Gabbard had more than one term under her belt, it wouldn't be so preposterous for her to challenge Abercrombie.

Schatz is a great senator; Hanabusa is gross and should retire. She isn't very intelligent, or perhaps she might be senile. It doesn't really matter what her views are at this point.

Interesting thoughts, my friend. I respectfully disagree with them.

Months ago I did some digging into this race, and even the local media is projecting that the Democratic Primary will decide Hawaii's next governor. Abercrombie is unpopular and Ige is virtually unknown. When you go from riding an anti-conservative wave (As widely unpopular two-term Republican Linda Lingle was term-limited) to a 58% mandate to losing and ending up as a one-termer, that's pretty bad.

Then again, Lingle herself went from being re-elected with 62% of the vote in a big Democratic year nationally in 2006 to losing her Senate race in 2012, with Democrat Mazie Hirono winning 62% of the vote.
