Article.

Former Governor Ben Cayetano, apparantly considered an Abercrombie ally before, is endorsing state legislator David Ige in the primary. Ariyoshi is also backing Ige, but I think that's much less surprising.

Aiona is essentially in for the Republicans.

What's their reasoning for supporting the primary challenger; do they just not like Abercrombie?

The old school Asian faction of the Hawaii Democratic party has never liked Abercrombie, e.g, Inouye tried to get Hanneman into the primary against Abercrombie in 2010.

Can this thread be changed into "Hawaii Gubernatorial Election 2014"?

Done; changed the OP.

A new party, the Hawaii Independent Party, successfully petitioned for ballot access. It sounds like one of their motivating factors was to draft Hannemann.

Hannemann is actually running as an independent.

Obama is also helping Abercrombie, cutting a radio ad for him.

The most recent debate. It actually starts around the 20-minute mark.

FWIW, the LG race for the Democratic nomination is about tied:

Though his actual percentage of the votes wasn't the lowest, Abercrombie's losing margin was the worst of any US Governor ever to lose a primary:

Aiona taking a more open approach to SSM than most Republicans:

On a similar note, Abercrombie is blaming his loss on SSM:

Civil Beat points out Aiona's association with conservatives as a liability:

This is why Ige is still favored. Its not like Abercrombie supporters are gonna flock to either Aiona or Hanneman, who are more conservative.
