The reason being is that Family Guy has never been one for continuity and perhaps its biggest weakness is it's often full of plot holes and episodes that contradict others. So this probably doesn't mean a whole lot in the long run.

And because I don't really care about plot when I watch Family Guy. I just like to see how many funny gags they can cram in from out of nowhere.

Well of course Cleveland is coming back. He's fine as a supporting character though. After all he was quite prominent in the show's supposed prime (personally I'd put its best years around 2005-2008)

None of the characters should get spin offs. They are fine only for their own roles, not leading a show. Like imagine "The Quagmire Show". It WOULD NOT work. It'd be a stupid one joke boring show. But on the show he's one of the funniest characters in TV history.

I'm now quite convinced this is just a ratings gimmick. It's a plot arc that'll be reset after a few episodes, either Stewie fixes his time machine or Death makes a reappearance or someone discovers a genie's magic lamp or something...it's Family Guy, anything's game. But I highly doubt this is permanent. Of course the producers aren't going to say that as it'd defeat the purpose.
