I was baptized and confirmed in the Greek Orthodox Church, which apparently means I can visit Mount Athos if I want to (restricted to Orthodox males over 18).
Are cell phones allowed there? If so it'd be a great place to play Ingress.
No clue. It's basically a big monastery and I think that sort of thing is generally frowned upon (both the cell phones and the playing of Ingress). Can't be stealing portals or whatever it is you do while people are trying to pray or meditate or whatever.
People play Ingress in cemeteries all the time and I hack for items during church (aa the church is a portal.) Mount Athos seems like it'd have lots of potential portals and would be a great field hub due to inaccesibility. Hard to take down.
But I checked, no portals there. Clearly no one has tried to play there yet.
That reminds me, about a week ago I was trying to set up a field hub in rural Minnesota. I found a rural Catholic church in Le Seuer county that would work great but happened upon it about the same time people (all olds by the way) were filing in for a Saturday evening mass, and here I am this obviously out of place looking guy with a weird looking (for this place) band hoodie walking around the entrance looking at his cell phone oddly. As I set things up some elderly couple filed in and then held the door open for me. I replied to them "That's fine, go on inside. I'm just here for the portal." Now I really have to wonder just how crazy that sounded to that couple and they're probably still confused about who I was.
