Very very few, likely due to most Americans first assigning it to the terrible music genre and stopping there.

More proof of Americans being dumbs, as that song is a masterpiece. One of the best works (though not THE best) by an utterly brilliant band that are some of the most brilliant songwriters of the century.

70%-80% sounds right. To be more specific they'd probably call it death metal, as anything with distorted guitars and rough vocals must be.

Probably around 50 to 60 percent. I personally wouldn't call it metal - really more "punk".

I think that's a function of the fact that heavy metal was once a popular genre and post-hardcore has thankfully never been the least bit popular.

Well over 90% I guess.  That is, if you gave them 'metal' as a choice in a multiple choice test.  If you just asked them what it was most would say 'I dunno, it sucks'.

Loads, but then they have the good sense not to fuss about largely meaningless genre distinctions. What's depressing is the sheer amount of try-hards everywhere.

I wonder what metalhead would ever write a lyric like "I would break my heart into a thousand jagged shards of what never was and never will be again". Or write a three page essay about the oppression of gender roles in their album liner notes. Or title a song "Humyn Capital" instead of "Human Capital". It's kind of funny how dumbs think the genres are the same when fans of them basically hate each other and are SO different.

If I bought a metal record with a wimpy screed about social inequity in the liners I'd break it over my knee.

Right, not only are they not the same thing, they are not in any way even remotely similar. My point. How many metalheads are Tumblr-style leftists?

You are not a metalhead. I've never seen you even claim to like an actual metal band (not metalcore) even once.

There are probably some, but I guarantee they're confined to the trendy post-black style. Deafheaven, Alcest and so on. This stuff is routinely castigated by real metalheads and the fans regarded as temporary passers-by, as No-True-Scotsman as that may be.

what's this?

let's just...

oh.

besides, i like Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Judas Priest, Slayer, Megadeth, Pantera, Dio, Guns N Roses, Kiss, Van Halen, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and the like. That's metal to me.

Half of that qualifies as classic rock at this point.
