Boris and BaconKing mentioned practically all the good ones already. To their lists I'll add /r/Foodforthought, which has the occasional interesting article. Most of the subreddits in the DepthHub network are at least worth checking out.

Reddit is kind of like a forum. The various subreddits are basically boards. Anyone can create their own sub, there are thousands of them for all sorts of things. Instead of threads, you post either a link (to a picture, article, etc) or a selfpost (which is just text) to a specific subreddit. People comment on posts.

The big difference with Reddit is that you can upvote or downvote every post and every comment. Instead of submissions being displayed by time like a forum though,  they're displayed (by default) as a function of net upvotes and time so that new, popular posts are at the top while old and boring ones sink down. You can also view the top posts which is based on upvotes alone; I'll look at a sub's top posts when I first discover it and I'll also occasionally look through the top posts of the last week/month on a sub I like to see if I missed anything good.

Not really. There are some interesting maps there (including my own that get posted from time to time by other people), but mostly it's rather bland postings from Wikipedia, reposts, or left-wing drivel.

Considering how some people view this forum, the latter might be right up our alley Tongue
