WASHINGTON, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- First-time unemployment benefits claims dropped under 300,000 for the week for only the second time since March 2007.

Initial claims fell by 23,000 in the week that ended Saturday to 298,000, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Thursday.

First-time claims dropped to 294,000 in early September, a month before the partial government shutdown sent claims soaring.

Uh, not true? January - May saw strong hiring 2004 - 2006, and 2011 - 2013. Some temp jobs disappear, but hiring overall remains very strong.

The strongest job growth in 2013 here in MN was January-April.

It's the same scare tactic every year "yeah this is good news but just wait until after the holidays"

Most retailers hired fewer seasonal workers this year than usual... or at least said they were going to.  So this growth should actually be even better on the whole.

At Walmart we even had a corporate hiring freeze covering the entire month of October.
