Since when are people who were 49 in 2012 considered "Gen X"?

They are trying to match presidential terms to generations at age 18. It doesn't always work. Technically people who were 48-49 in 2012 would be at the end of the Boomers (cut off at 1964), but the bulk of the cohort who became 18 during the Reagan/HWBush years would be Gen X.

Delighting to read! I'm in the 25-29 section of the millennials.

I realize this is anecdotal, but I would argue this younger generation is just as liberal, at least on social issues. I did some student teaching at a very rural school district here in Southeast Missouri and one of my lessons involved an activity to determine the students' political leanings, and when asked how many of them supported marriage equality, all but two of them raised their hands in a class of about 15. They were much more divided on the issue of abortion, though.

Will this put to rest the myth that millennials are moving the country rightward?

Is that a myth?  Never heard it.

I have always heard that the Baby Boomers were doing that, beginning about 30 years ago.

So are the arbitrary demarcations.  I'm in Generation X.  My brother, who is four years older than I, is a Baby Boomer.  Seems weird.

I don't see why it should be bizarre considering that there are some remarkable similarities within the different generational cohorts. That doesn't mean the system is perfect but it's worth looking at the voting habits and positions of different generations.
