Boehner: Tea party groups have ‘lost all credibility’

In a remarkable moment of political clarity, House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) escalated his feud with outside conservative advocacy groups that have repeatedly undermined his leadership team's agenda for three years.

"Frankly, I just think they've lost all credibility," Boehner told reporters Thursday at his weekly press briefing.

After years of enduring broadsides from groups such as Heritage Action, Boehner's last straw came this week when the collection of Washington-based groups attacked the bipartisan budget deal that Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) negotiated, with several announcing they opposed it before Ryan and his Senate counterpart, Patty Murray (D-Wash.), unveiled it Monday night.

"Are you kidding me?" Boehner screamed into the microphone Thursday, in mocking tones. On Wednesday, Boehner issued a brief attack on the groups, accusing them of "using" his GOP lawmakers, particularly younger, less experienced lawmakers.

Wow. That's a really stunning and unexpected shift.

I hope something can actually come out of it, like finally tossing away the Hastert rule.

It is a very pleasant surprise indeed.

pretty gutsy, imho.  Good for him.

Nope. He just lost his credibility. The Tea Party still has theirs.

I'll agree the Tea Party hasn't lost any credibility over this, but that's because it doesn't have any left at this point. They are shrill idiots more interested in sound bytes than governing.

Convince me that the Shutdown had even one sliver of merit. Then we'll talk, JCL.

Ohio isn't Tea Party country. It's the land of Rob Portman and Steve LaTourette.

I'd expect that this will be fodder for an unsuccessful Tea Party attempt to unseat him as speaker at the beginning of the next Congress.

What a fearless leader. So fearless that he led the nation into a shutdown instead of doing his job.

Hopefully this means that he's seen the light and has realized that he needs to stand up to his back-benchers.

It's the Dems who've rammed this country into the dirt.

Why is it that almost everything you say is some kind of argument by assertion? It's like you think that just you saying it makes it true, so it doesn't require any supporting logic or reason.

This plus hiring McCain's presidential advisor on immigration could be a sign that we may see a reform bill/bills pushed through the House in the next year.

I'm not asking if the Tea Party guy running against him will win, that'd be crazy, just asking if Boehner's comments here will drive Tea Party groups to throw serious money into the race (regardless of if its wasted)

The dems got the establishment wing to capitulate and left obamacare in the budget. Thus Boehner has joined the camp of leaving an unjust, immoral, and thus illegal law in place. The points the Tea Party folks raise are correct. Folks want the government out of their healthcare amongst other things.

Don't see Boehner surviving another Speakership vote this sounds more like he knows he's not running for Speaker next year and is just speaking his mind right now.

On the contrary, I think he may have strengthened his position. The “silent majority” is speaking up, and the Tea Party base, especially the grassroots activists, are very well informed when it comes to elections and how the polls are. People tend to ignore the fact that the Tea Party is built up of mostly lifelong Republicans who are more loyal to the party then their flamboyant politicians suggest.

Yeah, America doesn't want the government involved in anything except food stamps, outsourcing, increasing education funding, taxing the rich, increasing the minimum wage, increasing corporate regulation, ending right-to-work legislation, upholding affirmative action, and numerous other political issues. Try again, and this time actually give a reason to oppose ACA.

Good for Boehner. We've all been thinking it for a while now, glad he finally came out and said it. Perhaps someday Boehner will be remembered as the mostly ignored voice of reason he is for the conservative side.
