And to clarify, 'subject-subject' sex to me means, that each partner has the opportunity to be the subject. E.g.,

Two straight women are paid to share a kiss: object-object, because both women are objectified while neither shares in sexual pleasure
A gay man visits a prostitute: subject-object, because the whole encounter is designed to further the pleasure of one party only and the other party is objectified
You pleasure me, then I pleasure you: subject-subject

I hope that clears things up a little, also. And no, I don't see anything wrong with pornography, although admittedly the difference between that and prostitution is subtle.

haha.

We ought to have a Miles Law for these types of threads, like there's a Godwin's Law for political threads (first post to mention Hitler loses).  First post to mention Ron Jeremy in a porno thread loses.

As long as no one is emotionally or physically hurt in the production of pornography, then yes, it is moral.

If you believe what you read, most of them are an emotional wrecks before they get into porn, so I doubt producers of porn are doing them any favors.

It appears the majority of the forum uses consent as the sole determinant of sexual morality.

yes, it does.  though I ask you: what are your determinants?

What's wrong with Objectification anyway?

Would someone explain this me without trying to psychoanalyze porn consumers.

Objectification is fine while thinking about sexual impulses but the modern medium that pornography rests on has the potential to make this objectification a compulsive behavior that transcends sex and becomes omnipresent in social interactions between genders. If you're in a room with average college age American males, the danger of pornography to exacerbate already established gender norms becomes apparent.

So you are saying that it is impossible to think of you partner as a human person during the sexual act? I unfortunately am unable to contradict you Tongue but I highly doubt it.

Why would you want to do that?

I think that what most of us are referring to as pornography, however, depends at least in part upon the intentions of the people producing it--obviously almost anything can be consumed as pornography, according to taste. I'd also say that, personally, a lot of my moral objections to pornography don't really obtain any more, at least not as much, if it doesn't involve living actors (drawn stuff bothers me less than filmed stuff, written stuff bothers me less than drawn stuff, et cetera).

The problem is, it is very difficult to work out people's intentions when viewing the final product; in the case of modern pornography whether it is amateur and filmed by a consenting couple or is paid studio pornography by 'up for it' performers, or people coerced into doing so for money. I think it's easy to hold a general objection to it but like most moral based objections to anything (even murder) it starts to break down when you analyse examples placed before you.

In terms of the er...hierarchy of pornography I think most sensible people would agree that there is a difference between a pornographic frieze in the ruins of Herculaneum and a filmed DVD though it is worth nothing that both are there to 'titilate' those who are inclined to take that sort of pleasure in the imagery. However the strongest objection to pornography historically tends to focus on the main and most prolific medium of the day that is used to portray it.

If you are a Christian either activity is clearly immoral.  If you don't have Judeo Christian beliefs then do what you want.

(Full disclosure: What I originally posted was 'opebo-chan, please don't be lonely any more!' but when I saw this thread again a few minutes ago I decided that 'you don't have to...' captured my ~*~true feelings~*~ better.)

People who have sexual urges that they repress for moral/religious/whatever reasons tend to drive themselves crazy, become very on edge, or fail to think rationally.  This release-starved person then levies their crazy upon everyone else.  I see it happen all the time.  People need to be able to crank one out without feeling so damn terrible about it.

Prudes are to blame, of course.

That probably sums it up best.  What is the deal with the "is it moral" threads?  C'mon we all know we do immoral stuff.  Just grow up and deal with it.  And if you can't handle it then don't do it.

That's an argument for masturbation, not pornography. One doesn't necessitate the other.

opebo, your quote that Nathan decided to so ceremoniously immortalize in his signature is quite accurate no?

Alas, things would be so simple if the only problem with modern sexuality was "repression"...
