Suppose Romney just barely edges out McCain in New Hampshire, then ends up going one-on-one against Huckabee in the rest of the primaries.  That is, the early winners are:

IA: Huckabee
NH: Romney
MI: Romney
NV: Romney
SC: Huckabee
FL: Romney

etc…..with Romney eventually winning the nomination.

Who does Romney pick as his running mate?  What margin does he lose by against Obama in 2008?  Who then runs for the 2012 GOP nomination four years later, and who ends up winning it?

I think that Romney would likely pick Sarah Palin as well if he won the Republican nomination in 2008. I really don't see much change in the electoral map though, with the exception of Romney picking up New Hampshire and Obama maybe picking up Missouri or Georgia. In 2012, I think that Rick Santorum would ultimately win the nomination and pick Newt Gingrich or Tim Pawlenty as his running-mate. Despite the fact that I don't agree with Rick Santorum on nearly all issues and despise his ideology, I feel that he would have been one of Obama's strongest opponents in the general election. I think that Santorum would have easily picked up Florida, Ohio, Colorado and Iowa and received 70% of the vote in Oklahoma, West Virginia, Arkansas and Alabama and 60% of the vote in Tennessee, South Carolina, Texas and Mississippi.

Why would Obama lose New Hampshire? He didn't in 2012 against Romney.

The rest of your statement about Santorum is best be ignored.

They hate each other.  They would only share a ticket with each other if they were forced to because of some kind of brokered convention scenario.

He would probably do worse than McCain.
