Which is fine if you can keep it from having any influence into your interaction with other people - which I'm sure you manage to, and which I also strive to. But I you can't deny that the kind of images that are watched have a major impact on the way individuals think and act, and thus on a society's culture and mores.

Honestly, I don't even think "official" porn is really the main problem. The kind of softcore porn that we find everywhere on commercials and trashy TV shows actually has a more perverse and infinitely more powerful effect on society IMO.

This proliferation of mines and institutes where other posts are just quoted out of context is bad. With the exception of the comedy goldmine, they're mostly used just as a lazy way to express one's own opinion without actually responding in the thread.

At risk of sounding awfully moderate heroish, I wish there could be a larger middle ground between extreme social libertine individualism and the holier than thou moralism telling us we should feel ashamed and immoral for looking at porn and wanking; or hell, for just finding a person of the opposite (or same, if that's your thing) sex attractive and talking about that. I don't feel ashamed, patriarchal, objectifying or whatever when I think that J-Law is an extremely attractive person and I don't appreciate holier than thou moralism which tells me that I should.

I think I come across as more radical than I really am, mostly as a result of knee-jerk reactions to the kind of libertarianish drivel which constantly dominates any discussion about sexuality on this forum. For some reason, this has become one of my pet peeves (along with people who criticize the Welfare state, anti-Obama hacks, or many other examples). Thus, yeah, I sometimes tend to err on the other side and it's not very well received.

So, just to reassure you, what you're describing here aren't really my actual views. Yes, I said one should feel bad after watching porn, but does that really mean that much? We all do things we feel we shouldn't be doing. I feel bad after eating too much, or for wasting time on an internet forum instead of working on a paper I have to hand in for Monday - but this doesn't prevent me from doing it. Nor do I advocate actively shaming other people. That would be taking it a step to far, for sure. Also, I don't think I ever said you can never comment on a woman's attractiveness (come on, do I really come across this way?). There are just appropriate and less appropriate settings to do that, and the main criterion to respect is always to question oneself as to how what you say may be received by others. I also don't think I have all the answers about this, I often wonder what is appropriate or not, and I'm open for discussion on this point (though there are certain views on the topic I'd rather dismiss from the outset).

Anyway, bottom line is: sorry if I sometimes overplay it, and let's try to finally have more mature discussions on the subject.

I agree wholeheartedly.  This post belongs in the Good Post Gallery.  (Kidding.  I don't put posts in that abomination of a thread.)  Would love to see all the institutes and mines except the Comedy Goldmine disappear, but what can you do?

Look, it's fine to rip on feminism. I do it a fair bit myself. But you need to have actually understood it first to avoid looking like an idiot. If you're a teen virgin, like most of our resident misogynists are, you  tend to look like an idiot when you discuss these things. Hell, even if you happened to be born rich and buys prostitutes you, surprisingly, STILL looks pretty daft when spouting silly sexism.

I'm not really sure where to begin with all this, nor do I have any illusion that it will make a difference. But you should all be aware that anyone with brains, education and rudimentary awareness wouldn't consider your 'points' even worthy to contend with. That should maybe give you pause.
