The prude brood is, rather ironically, like porn:  You know it when you see it.

Actually it's the prude squad that is mostly teen (or early twenties I guess) virgins, so...

Ironically, I think the extremely vocal "non-prudes" here are more likely to be virgins.

Oh look, the so-edgy forum clique is at it again. Roll Eyes

When Tony and I agree on something, you know True Leftists are at work.

Also, you misspelled monastery. Typical for the syphilis-addled mind of the sexual libertine.

We do need to remember, I think, that isn't their fault, not personally--or, not so much that it isn't their fault as that we haven't really any real high ground because we're sinful as well, in our own various ways. The world, the flesh, and the devil are powerful enemies for anybody to contend with!

Indeed. I was going for over the top hyperbole, but you are definitely correct.

No, buddy.  Those are mostly older fellows.  These prudes ten to be college age or younger.

No, they're not. These meanings you ascribe are pure silliness to others.

Yes, they are. You think they're silliness because that's how they got you.

Who? Oh, 'Satan'?  So you really believe in all that stuff?

After all, I don't feel very 'gotten', Prude Nathan.  The difference between my life and yours amounts to only about 2-3 two hour events per week.... I suspect we've a lot more in common than not.

This proliferation of mines and institutes where other posts are just quoted out of context is bad. With the exception of the comedy goldmine, they're mostly used just as a lazy way to express one's own opinion without actually responding in the thread.

With the exception of the Good Post Gallery, which at least encourages people to make good, lengthy, and thoughtful posts, I 100000% agree with the sentiment here. It's made a lot of the discourse around here even more smarmy than I remember it being, as it encourages people to continue trolling along with their ridiculous caricatures or try telling people off in creatively insulting ways just so they get noticed.

I wish people could actually just talk to one another like people that are interested in discussing things, instead of just trying to out-clever each other with attempted coup de grāce after attempted coup de grāce. Then again, maybe my head was just too deep in Atlasia until the last 6 months to notice the quality of discourse on the rest of the forum was always terrible to begin with. Still, I don't remember it being this snarky.

I wish the forum could find a balance between being teenage internet social justice warriors and bro-tastic fratboys but I'm not optimistic.

I fail to see anything wrong with the second one.

to touch on an issue that reared its head in this thread: I do not believe Atlas 'suffers' from a lack of women because of the attitudes of its male posters towards women, but rather the attitudes being aired is a product of a lack of women, of a "gentlemen's club" environment.  the idea that women are scanning the Forum and deciding not to register because of the content of discussions is patently absurd.

I wank by myself and have sex with my husband. Life is joyous when you actually have sex rather than theorise it and deconstruct it.

But surely theorising about sex is a form of masturbation?

I read this as Prude Blood Monastery which somehow seems more appropriate.

So yeah, I have to apologize for getting too carried away on topics like this one. The ideal I strive for is the middle ground outlined by Hash, Kemp and Marokai, but in practice I always somehow end up as the standard-bearer for a viewpoint I only partly espouse. I've made some attempts at having a more serene discussion on the topic, as this thread attests, and I am convinced that we can get there if we all relinquish our identitarian banners for a little while.

For the record Antonio, the sentiment expressed in that post quoted in the OP is pretty reminiscent of the bill being passed in Uganda along with the anti-gay bill that would effectively ban miniskirts, or the people who threw a fit over Beyonce's Super Bowl performance or Miley Cyrus' MTV VMAs performance, aka extreme socons.

I'd hardly call most of the people who I knew or who otherwise came across my radar who objected to Miley Cyrus's VMA performance 'extreme socons'. There is also of course a world of difference between simply wearing a miniskirt and that. The sentiment is not all that reminiscent because the underlying reasoning is pretty different.

OK, now that's utterly ridiculous.

Not anti-sex, but still something somebody who doesn't drink regularly would assume (which he even admits in the post):

None, I don't drink. Though I'm pretty sure krazen swigs down a Jack Daniels before he comes on here.

Despite using all of them on a regular basis I agree with this to some extent, although I'd include the Silver Mine - it appears to be a useless thread that's never worth reading but it acts as a useful filter for the Gallery. And the Sage Garden is of course useful to avoid the Comedy Goldmine being clogged by Snowstalker pseudomarxism.

The Sulfur Mine and Deluge could be easily absorbed into the Comedy Goldmine, though.

to touch on an issue that reared its head in this thread: I do not believe Atlas 'suffers' from a lack of women because of the attitudes of its male posters towards women, but rather the attitudes being aired is a product of a lack of women, of a "gentlemen's club" environment.  the idea that women are scanning the Forum and deciding not to register because of the content of discussions is patently absurd.

This is also correct. A forum like this is inherently going to attract vastly more men than women anyway.

Some history is needed in regards to the mines and institutes. It used to be for the longest time that only The Comedy Goldmine existed, however it was full of "haha this is funny because it's so stupid" posts which Alcon (a pretty hands off moderator in general I might add) wasn't too fond of but couldn't really stop because it wasn't really against the ToS and there was so many of them. Hence the Deluge came, and it served as a filter, only legitimately funny posts went to the Comedy Goldmine. For awhile the mods tried to close the Deluge, but then the Goldmine got stuck with such posts again, and it was reopened. Also before the Deluge it was quite common to see a poll made asking a question and then quoting the poster as a way of saying "Do you agree with this insanely stupid comment?" (Yes this happens now but nowhere near as often) since people wanted to highlight stupidity but had no real place. And furthermore it's actually improved civility here, now if you see something that enrages you you can just dump it in the Deluge to vent and then move on, while before it resulted in long flame wars and meant that trolls (like Zarn and those right wing hacks who pop up only around election time) could actually disrupt threads by posting their crap and getting a furious reaction. Now it just goes that the idiot posts something, it gets archived in the Deluge, everyone laughs, and then ignored, and thus trolls like those poll reweighters who all disappeared after election time couldn't disrupt as much as they did historically.
