I found this quiz and thought this might make a fun topic, especially with maps. Take it.

My results:

Top Cities: Fresno, Phoenix, Mesa/Tempe
Bottom Cities: Jersey City, Newark/Paterson, Philadelphia

Take with non-native speaker's chunk of salt (especially with the always-somewhat-silly questions regarding the pronunciation of specific words); this seems to be a map of uniquely American accent and vocab features (blue).

For most of these I had little to no idea what to answer, so this probably isn't very representative.

I got New York, Yonkers and Newark as the top three (most of these American dialect quizzes seem to assign me to New York) and Wichita, Lincoln and Des Moines as the bottom three.

This has been posted before coming from a different site, but I think this version at least fixed the Duluth anomaly, which is good!

Anyway, I get basically what you'd expect:
1) Minneapolis/St. Paul (all of Minnesota and western Wisconsin is bright red)
2) Spokane
3) Salt Lake City

And lowest:
1) New Orleans
2) Philadelphia
3) New York City

Answer is not surprising at all.  The state of Missouri is almost completely dark red, haha.

Top three:

Overland Park, Kansas
Springfield, Missouri
Scottsdale, Arizona

Bottom three:

Greensboro, North Carolina
Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

I guess if I ever meet Dr. Cynic in person, I'll need a translator lol.

Ummmm, it just gave me the original posters map... telling me Paterson, NJ, Newark, NJ, and Philly were my least similar.

Don't click my results for the quiz. Try the "Take it" link in the first line of my original post. I'd have a very hard time believing those were your least matched cities.

Overall an interesting project that I think shows the effect of assimilation and public education around urban cores.  I come from a West Texas family and my results definitely don't match West Texas but actually are closer to the Ozarks (kind of close to where I grew up).  Anybody notice something similar?

Yep!  People talk like their peers, not like their parents; just look at the children of immigrants, or, in all probability, every single person who responds here (e.g., I look like a Minnesotan and not like a Michigander).

I took this quiz three times but the website wouldn't give me a result - just a blank space where the map and cities are supposed to be. I can follow the links posted and see those maps just fine though. D:

Thanks!

My dialect is most similar to those given for the upper Midwest, Northern Plains, Northern Rockies, and Pacific Northwest, whereas the South and Boswash area were very dissimilar (New Jersey being most different). With few exceptions, the results are a match for how people speak in all the places I spent growing up. Distinctive words included "pop," "kitty-corner," "sub," and having no word for the night before Halloween. The one least characteristic of the areas I matched well appeared to be my use of "ya'll," as one would expect in the South.

Top 3:

Minneapolis / St. Paul
Grand Rapids
Spokane

Bottom 3:

Philadelphia
Newark / Paterson
Yonkers

I can't get the links to work

http://nyti.ms/1jxE9Mv

Three most similar cities:

1.  Twin Cities
2.  Des Moines
3.  Omaha

Least similar:

1.  NYC
2.  Patterson/Newark
3.  Philadelphia

I definitely don't talk like an east coaster or southerner.

How do you guys actually post the image of the map?  Am I that inept?

The reddest areas are Minnesota (though not Wisconsin as much), North Dakota, and parts of Montana.  Basically a red belt from the Twin Cities northwest to Fargo and Grand Forks then running west across ND into Montana.. while WI, IA, and SD are all lesser orange colors.

This would indicate I have the old fashioned Minnesotan accent which is being squeezed by the migration of Wisconsinese.

Even so, my accent isn't strong at all.  It's word choices and things like pronouncing caught and cot and marry, merry, and mary the same way Tongue

Obviously, Pittsburgh was the top answer. Also matched in Cincinatti and Knoxville.

Least matches were Minneapolis and Miami.
