Injuries as activists and police clash over Hamburg's Rote Flora center

There have been scenes of violence in Hamburg as protesters vented their anger at plans to carry out evictions at a theater. The building, home to squatters, has become a popular rallying point for activists.

Stones and bottles were thrown at police as more than 7,000 people demonstrated in Hamburg on Saturday.

Officers responded with baton charges and water cannon, breaking up the protest over the eviction of the left-wing Rote Flora cultural center.

(...)

The Rote Flora centre - a theater in the city's Schanzenviertel area - was first occupied by squatters in 1989. Since then it has become something of a rallying point for left-wing activists, with regular summer protests coinciding with a local street fair. The latest protests were sparked by the threat of eviction for those living in the theater since it was bought from local authorities by a developer.

Yet these far-left degenerate hooligans still have the audacity to criticize their far-right opponents for being thuggish.
This is embarrassing for Hamburg.

Surely not more embarrassing than a gay CDU man running its government, gell?

I'm not in favor of violence, but other than that, these guys have every right to protest this.

The left-wing German Black Block is coming to Vienna each year now as well to protest the FPÖ ball that is held in Jan./Feb.

In recent years, German demonstrators from the left made up a sizeable amount of the anti-FPÖ rioters.

When the FPÖ people walk into the Hofburg for their dance, the Black Block and others shout "Nazis out !" and sometimes attack them by throwing stuff at them:

This led to HC Strache saying: "We are the new Jews".

Perhaps they should have driven a tank onto the streets. That would've made the protesters s*** themselves.

The contempt you two show for anything apart from your own views is palpable.

I hold contempt for violent thugs committing crimes and abusing the Hamburg police, yes.

Looks like a pretty sh**tty area of Hamburg (not that clashes between police and protestors tend to happen in nice areas...)

How can someone 'abuse the police', hifly?  They're the thug-enforcers of a brutal social order.

Oh, I wasn't just talking about this thread, though incidentally I do agree with you on this particular instance.

No, no, no Opebo. The thugs are definitely the selfish middle and upper class students who want to tear down the social order that has enabled them to go to university and flash their pathetic little consciences around.

I'm actually quite sure that the German police union disagrees with your assessment, and in your worldview unions are always right, aren't they?

So you believe these people to be upper class?  Interesting assumption, but baseless.

Police unions are tied with teamsters' unions for being the worst ones out there.

That may very well be true but at the end of the day the overwhelming majority of policemen and policewomen are people who work very hard for relatively little money. That's why I would also expect them to be deserving of international labor solidarity.

This of course has nothing to do with ANTIFA, but it immediately reminded me of this

Looks like a pretty sh**tty area of Hamburg (not that clashes between police and protestors tend to happen in nice areas...)

Well, it is Hamburg-Sternschanze. Vote in the 2013 Federal election:
Greens      29.2
SPD          23.9
Linke         22.1
CDU          12.2
Pirates        5.1
FDP            2.8
Die PARTEI  2.2

As left-alternative as you can get in Hamburg, and anywhere else in Germany with the possible exception of central Berlin. Northward extension of the St. Pauli nightlife district, under heavy gentrification pressure.

The "Schanzenfest" each summer is part of the traditional itinerary of "riot tourists" from all over Germany, alongside 1st of May in Berlin-Kreuzberg, and obviously also the FPÖ ball in Vienna (Hannover's Glocksee Festival used to be on the list as well for several years). Seems they got bored over the Christmas break and looked for a new event. [Note that you don't see any FC St. Pauli flags on the pictures, even though the riots took place only a few hundred meters away from the stadium, on the evening of a crucial home match (which St. Pauli lost, thereby missing the opportunity to move up to 2nd place in the Second Division)].
When I was still living in the Schanze, I always despised these riot tourists - coming without real understanding of and interest in local issues, just looking for "action", and messing up everything.

OTOH, the "Rote Flora" (the theatre in question) has quite a significance for the local scene, and is a symbol of resistance against gentrification. A former class-mate of mine is still living in the area. Since his hey-days as anti-nuclear activist, he has settled a bit - made quite some money as PR specialist, and now spends half of the year scuba-diving in one of the three resorts he co-owns in Egypt, and the other half in Germany launching PR campaigns for scuba-diving in the Red Sea (well, at least that was what he did before the Arab Spring, haven't met him since).
Nevertheless, he told me, should anybody dare to touch the "Rote Flora", he would take out his black motorcycle helmet and demonstration gear, and get onto the street again.

A police union is essential a company union.
