One of the most massive HPs in American history.  We're still feeling the effects of his attempts to distort states' rights for supporting slavery.  Absolutely evil man.

We can thank him for the "nullification" crap that helped start the civil war, and is still being used to try and subvert the constitution today.

Nullification is a radical interpretation to me, and Andrew Jackson did the right thing to oppose him. That being said, he's a more interesting figure in history than the whiny moderate heros of the Whig Party.

I can second this. He really distorted and damaged the concept of states right more than any opponent of states rights ever could dream of doing.

This.

That doesn't make him a FF at all; if anything, "interesting" people tend to be the more awful ones.

Nullification has its origin not with Calhoun and the tariff issue but more than three decades earlier with Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions that Madison and Jefferson authored back in 1798 concerning the Alien and Sedition Acts.  So if nullification is why you think Calhoun is an HP, then to be consistent, you must think Jefferson and Madison are HPs as well.

True, but it wasn't just that Calhoun subscribed to this, but that he was also one of its biggest, if not the biggest, proponents. Plus, Madison himself did not have quite as radical an interpretation as Calhoun did, opposing South Carolina's attempt at nullification, for example.

Both Jefferson and Madison had the benefit of actually having to run a government and seeing first hand the folly of the sort of strict constructionism that lies at the core of nullification.  If Calhoun had become President in the 20's  he might well have done the same.

Probably, especailly cosnidering that he conformed his trade views to that of SC over the course of the same ten year period prior to the nullifcation crisis.
