Except that Israel, unlike its neighbors, has free exercise of religion.

They just don't feel the need to give equal representation in their Knesset religious displays to a small minority. I'm sure Christian Arabs would be far happier in Arab Muslim countries, which have such a long and storied tradition of good treatment of their Christian minority.

The fact is that 98% of Americans, were they living in Israel, would be regarded as second class citizens by virtue of not being Jewish.

Just because Israel doesn't keep itself to American standards, that doesn't make Non-Jews second class citizens, just like non-Anglicans aren't second class citizens in England even though it is the official state religion.

I don't think Americans understand the concept of a nation-state.

How is Israel a nation-state? It isn't ethnically, linguistically or culturally homogenous.

The majority speaks Hebrew and share a common religion and identity. Israeli Jews are a people and they form an etnically defined nation.

Who cares? The Speaker probably shouldn't have done this, but acting as if it's some sort of terrible controversy is silly.

Is this a non-ironic War On Christmas thread? Seriously?

Here's one of those things that Australia did well this year.

There is a (very modest) Christmas tree tucked away in the lobby of Parliament House, and people can buy ornaments to hang on the tree, with the proceeds from the sale of ornaments going to charity.

That said, watching John Hogg and Bronwyn Bishop trying to engage children is absolutely terrifying.

Well, I guess there's only one solution: We must send Bill O'Reilly to Jerusalem. Permanently.

Why not, say, Ashdod, instead?

Doesn't Jerusalem is the city with the most orthodox, hardliners Jews?

That's cruel and unusual punishment, man. We produced Bill O'Reilly, so we should grin and bear him. Wink
