Let's say your Bush Sr in 1988, and you had the task of picking your vice presidential candidate. Your trailing in the polls to a mediocre candidate at best in Dukakis. You need a spark for your campaign to both rally the Republican base and ride the tide of undecided voters to election day where you hope to continue the Republican's success.

Who would you choose? Still go with Quayle, a mixed Republican like Jack Kemp, or strict Conservative like Dick Cheney?

You can also predict the race as well!

Jack kemp was seen as extremely conservative back then, and he was only 53. He'd be a great pick.

I'm not sure about that, Kemp would have upstaged Bush the same way he stole the spotlight from Dole. Sure, that fires up the base, but it would amplify the "wimp factor" and it could hurt Bush as well.

Good point. In that case, if I was Bush I would drop out during the primaries and endorse Kemp. Wink

John Danforth would have actually been a fantastic choice for George H.W. Bush, possibly the best in my opinion. In addition, James Martin, Bob Dole, Terry Brandstad and Warren Rudman would have made pretty good running-mate choices for Bush as well.

I agree Senator John Danforth would have been an excellent pick.

I don't know what Bush was thinking when he picked Quayle.

Another excellent candidate, in my view, would have been Governor James R. Thompson of Illinois, a Midwestern powerhouse political leader.

I didn't remember her being as old as she was. I would not have picked her.
Alright then, uh, Nancy Kassbaeum?
