One of the few social democratic parties that hasn't completely sold out. Massive Freedom Party, really wish we had an equivalent to them here in the states.

Massive FP.  As TNF said, one of the few truly social democratic parties in the world the remain, but I have serious suspicions that their current leader is out to change that.

Fun fact about Mulcair: When in Montreal earlier this summer, I stayed in his riding (Outremont).

The myth so dearly held by True Leftists that the NDP remains some uncorrupted, unsullied and courageous True Leftist vanguard in the face of the neoliberal onslaught is quite hilarious.

Yeah, they look quite centrist and moderate to me (although sill better than all the alternatives in Canada, for sure).

Try the "Principles and Policies" Section, it appears pretty left-of-center.  Their 2011 platform is also worth a glance. Though I think part of it is that people actually trust them to carry out their platform should they win power, as they don't (yet) have the stench of having served in government and enacted right-wing policies contrary to their campaign promises.

They've held power provincially and for the most part they haven't done anything leftists. my province just had 4 years of NDP government, and while I would consider it incompetent, it certainly wasn't leftist.

While I'm aware that they're turning to the right instead of pulling the conversation to the left, they seem alright. Better than any "leftist" party in the states.

Oh the Nova Scotia wing has undoubtedly caught the neoliberal virus already.  And it will spread, I'm sure.

Haven't they basically been a disaster every time they've been in provincial government? I mean, they're a cool party, and historically Tommy Douglas etc. was great, but they seem to be incompetent centrists when it comes to actually governing.

Certainly an FP, although, as other posters have pointed out, it's well to the right of what people think.

It's not so much neoliberalism, as parochialism. Corporatist economics is practically a given here Sad

It's... strange. Historically the NDP have been one of the most moderate of the first world socialist parties, and returned to that position under Layton and now Mulcair.* Of course this makes them very radical by Canadian standards, but then Canadian politics is not radical as a rule. Though I suppose the NDP tends to be less hostile to fringe leftishness than most of its sister parties, largely because it has always been a (federal) opposition party.

*I.e. the period in which they were, in fairness, an unusually left-wing party of that type happened to coincide with the period when they were a marginalised and basically irrelevant relic of politics as it had been before the great constitutional and existential crises of the 1990s. And even then there were righties in the caucus.
