Why the hell would he tell us that now and make himself a lame duck for his entire final term?

Maybe things are so bad in the DFW GOP that he needs to give the not-crazy candidates enough time to line up fundraising and party support so that he doesn't get succeeded by some incompetent TPer like Jonathan Stickland or Jodie Laubenberg.
