Anybody ever perused through the archives to find the first mention of Obama on Atlas? It would be cool to see what people were saying about him back in late 2004 and 2005.

(or earlier for those very perceptive members)

Earliest I found

The GOP could get their favored opponent in IL--

WEEK-TV-Pantagraph poll shows a shift in the front runner position to become the Democratic candidate for Illinois Senate and some weaknesses for President Bush in the state.

The Research 2000 Illinois Poll was conducted from March 1 through March 3, 2004 with a total of 800 likely voters who vote regularly in state elections. The margin for error is 5% for both primary samples.

After a week of battling questions about a domestic violence charge in his past former frontrunner Blair Hull is now third in the race to represent his party for Peter Fitzgerald's position. Barack Obama has 22% of the responses, compared to 20% for Dan Hynes. Hull comes in next with 15% of the vote, one percent ahead of Maria Pappas. 23% of the deomcratic primary voters are undecided in the poll.

On the republican side, Jack Ryan leads with more than double the vote of the next closest candidate, Jim Oberweis. Ryan has the support of 38% of those polled compared to 15% for Oberweis and 10% for McKenna. 26% of the republican voters are still undecided.

In the Presidential race, those who responded to the poll said if the election was held today, 54% would vote for John Kerry compared to 36% for George W. Bush and one percent for Ralph Nader.

Barak also won the endorsements of the Tribune and Sun-Times. He's no DLCer. There will be clear ideological differences.

This is a later post from the same year but it's pretty good.

I'd like Richardson if he were a Republican.

I like Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice, but I don't think either one of them would ever run.

Harold Ford may be one of the better minority prospects, but I don't know that much about him, other than that he seems to have maybe too good a talent for self promotion.

I have heard good things about Obama Baraka, but I know relatively little about him other than that he is running for Senator from Illinois.  He is half white and half African (as opposed to African-American), so he doesn't quite fit the "minority" mold, but I guess he would pass under the "one drop" rule that many people have unfortunately adopted from the old southern bigots.

I absolutely loathe Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson and most of the members of the Congressional black caucus.

I believe we determined a few years ago that it's the Obama Baraka post.

This might be he earliest in a post I made.

Terry McAuliffe should have been ousted after the 2002 election. Why he was kept around is anybody?s guess.

I hope he sticks around... I like his record! Smiley

We'll start a group of Republicans for keeping Terry McAuliffe and nominating Hilliary Clinton in 2008. :-)

Not happening.

The other one quoted above is older, so, um.

The Obama Baraka thing is still one of the earliest and is infinitely more memorable, is all.

I doubt it, since this one replaced it in 2003 and Obama didn't become known until the primaries in 2004.

I remember a thread about this, and IIRC we found one from Feb 2004.

Apparently Teabagger myths were popular on this forum before they even actually existed.

Barak Obama?  What sort of ethnic background?  I'm guessing Arab, possibly Muslim?

He is a Muslim afro american

I don't know that he's not Muslim but he's certainly not Nation of Islam Muslim.
