It used to be Midwestern, but do to the shift in politics along with the decline in Kansas City/St. Louis and growth in the Southwest part of the state it has now become more Southern. Similar to how Maryland and Delaware are now Northeastern and Virginia is quickly heading that way.

Its defined as a Midwestern state and would call it so, however there's no doubt it has added more southern elements over the years. (not including the already dominant baptist presence)

Depends on where you are in Missouri.

St. Louis=Midwest

Ozarks=South

It's definitely Midwestern if your looking at a map but politically speaking its culture and politics are like the South as of late.

Racially, historically, and socioeconomically St. Louis has a lot more in common with Memphis rather than Chicago or Minneapolis.

It's a border state, so it's a mix of both. I'd say it's more Midwestern than Southern though.

Its about 65/35 Midwestern/Southern, if we examine a broad range of characteristics.  I would, years ago, have said 'its obviously Midwestern', but now I find it a bit more mixed.

Probably Southern, due to the majority religion in Missouri being Baptist.

Obviously the cities are more Midwestern though.

No, the division isn't really north/south, more St. Louis and a corridor to Columbia or all the way to KC is very midwestern, while both the Ozarks/southern Missouri, and the wastelands north of the I-70 corridor being more 'Southern'.  That is, northern Missouri all the way to the Iowa border is very Baptist and right-wing, while the big cities and Columbia are more liberal.

Another fact to reinforce Missouri's "Southern" status:

Missouri has voted with TN is every presidential election since 1960 while it hasn't voted with IL since 1988.
