Its about time someone got started on it. Just recently Intel was stressing the continued longevity of silicon, but qubits have far more potential. Even if Moore's Law isn't ending soon, it will end one day.

I, for one, support our government looking to break into the 4th dimension.

The reason that first comes to mind would be to continue spying on foreign governments (the article states that this research was prompted by a fear that the US government would fall behind the EU and Swiss governments in quantum computing). The other obvious motivation would be to continue spying on individuals and organizations. Personally, I don't see how a quantum computer wouldn't be used for both of those things, if it truly does possess the abilities listed in the article.
