I expect congressional apportionment and Obama-Romney stats within 24 hours.  All with maps!!

And wake up Scott, we'll need a series of threads starting with Absaroka FFS (Freedom Fictional State) or HFS.

The only three states today (that I see) that don't have any interference of fictional states are Iowa, South Carolina, and Connecticut.

Oh, and North Carolina.

Connecticut confirmed as the best state in the union

-Only state to keep its true borders
-Two states named after it (New CT, West CT)

FYI: residents of Dade County, GA still often refer to themselves as "the Independent State of Dade".

I'm actually trying XD

It would be much easier if this map had county lines; I'm trying to estimate for some ambiguous areas.

Lumping Los Angeles and Ventura and none of the rest of that metropolitan area in with the Bay Area is a remarkably awful idea.

This has got me thinking. What if upon the death of every president, some arbitrary (or not so arbitrary) region of the country gets to have a state named after him? What would the map look like then?

The map is incorrect in its locations of the Killington and Winhall enclaves. Killington is to the north of Winhall.

In 2012, Oregon would have been 55% Obama and Jefferson is 54% Romney. I was too lazy to calculate any others. Tongue

Their pretext of "Red Wisconsin" and "Blue Wisconsin" doesn't make all that much sense, as they put most of the Republican rural counties in "Blue Wisconsin" and most of the Democratic rural counties in "Red Wisconsin". Also, why on earth is Winnebago County its own state?

The population inequality for some of these is beyond insane.  No way all these random rural counties would be given 2 senators each!  But if this map were reality, 2 major things would change about our politics:

1.  Hispanic voters would be a swingier demographic- the GOP would have to reach out to them a lot earlier than IRL to remain competitive in this electoral college.  There are easily 8-10 plurality-Hispanic states.

2.  Blue Dog Democrats would remain much more relevant- in part by necessity so that the Democrats could contest the Senate, but also because of all the rural Southern/Appalachian counties that would be independent states.

I believe you have all of them, but I don't believe Winhall, Killington, and Lunenberg are their own states.

I calculated a few of these based on county data:

Boston 78% D
Multnomah 76% D
Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket 71% D
Vermont 67% D
Providence 66% D
Massachusetts 60% D
New Connecticut 60% D
North Massachusetts 59% D
Connecticut 58% D
Rhode Island 58% D
Essex 57% D
Oregon 55% D
Maine 53% D
Aroostook 52% D
New Hampshire 52% D
Newington and Rye 50% D
Jefferson 54% R
Indian Stream 62% R

I'll add more later.

Whenever I see maps like this I always have to shake my head at the map drawers because they so often split the Columbus Metro right down the middle like there isn't even a city there.  Since this map is supposedly loosely based on historical movements to create new states it's likely that Columbus was not yet a significant city when the state of Washington was proposed.  However, other map makers would do well to realize there is a rather large city in the middle of Ohio.

An initiative to create 6 Californias has been filed (it means that someone was willing to put up the $200 filing fee).

6 Californias Initiative (PDF)

The 6 states would be:

(1) A new state, named Jefferson, including the territory represented by the boundaries of
the following counties: Butte, Colusa, Del Norte, Glenn, Humboldt, Lake, Lassen, Mendocino,
Modoc, Plumas, Siskiyou, Shasta, Tehama, and Trinity.

(2) A new state, named North California, including the territory represented by the
following counties:, Amador, El Dorado, Marin, Napa, Nevada, Placer, Sacramento, Sierra,
Solano, Sonoma, Sutter, Yolo, and Yuba.

(3) A new state, named Central California, including the territory represented by the
boundaries of the following counties: Alpine, Calaveras, Fresno, Inyo, Kern, Kings, Madera,
Mariposa, Merced, Mono, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Tulare, and Tuolumne.

(4) A new state, named Silicon Valley, including the territory represented by the
following counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, San Benito, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara,
Santa Cruz, and Monterey.

(5) A new state, named West California, including the territory represented by the
following counties: Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Los Angeles, and Ventura.

(6) A new state, named South California, including the territory of Imperial, Orange,
Riverside, San Bernardino, and San Diego.

There would also be an initiative process by which a county could switch to a different state.

Anyone want to run a re-apportionment with these boundaries?  Also, those are some of the worst state names ever.

I could adapt the state names I used in https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/GALLERY/256_19_01_14_4_43_15.jpeg[/img]]this thread where I redistributed the 50 states. I based the names on the native peoples from the area. My borders are different, but this would be one sort-of matchup:

Jefferson = Shasta
North California = Paiute (this is actually mostly part of my Shasta as well, Sierra is the only county in my Paiute)
Central California = Yokuts
Silicon Valley = Ohlone
West California = Chumash (except for SLO this matches my state)
South California = Cahuilla (this one exactly matches my state)
