Is cat wash where you just kind of lick yourself? Is a cat literally doing it? Did you intend to type car wash, instead? So many questions.

A "cat wash" is a Katzenwäsche.

Maybe you cannot translate it literally from German to English though.

It's the sort of washing where you only wash certain parts of your body, for example the armpits, head/hair and/or genital regions.

Maybe you can help me out what the correct English term is ?

I think some call it a 'w****'s bath', though I would never use that term.

For myself, I always take showers, but if I were properly ensconced in wealth I would doubtless take baths in an enormous tub, washed attentively by feminine acolytes.

I always have heard this referred to as a "bird bath".

We don't have a term for this because no respectable American would consider that to be sufficient hygiene. Sounds like a hooker living out of her car and giving herself a perfunctory rubdown with moist towelettes and perfume samples before she goes out on her next call.

I've heard it called a "spit bath".  It's not an acceptable form of hygiene cleanliness unless the power is out and you can't use the shower.

I prefer showers.  They're faster, and easier to get in and out of.  I find bathtubs to be quite uncomfortable, tbh.

I've never heard of the third.  Wash your whole body ffs.  You don't have to shampoo your hair every day or even use much soap if you're that worried... but you should wash your body.

Showers and baths are completely different things and serve different purposes.  Showers are to clean up.  Baths are to relax.

I live in Minnesota.  I'm surrounded by water.  I couldn't care less how much water I use.  It's one of the luxuries of living here.  That said, i don't go out of my way to waste it.  Just.. I don't care when it comes to personal hygiene.

Down here the third option might be a "Pommy wash" which, as far as I'm aware, is just applying deodorant.

I do long showers. A couple times a year I'll have a nice bubble bath and drink champagne when I want to relax. But a nice detachable showerhead with different settings is enough to stress less.

The third isn't common these days in the wealthy countries, yeah.

But remember that it was the main method of washing even here after the war, almost everywhere.

People after WW2 (or before) didn't have something like a bathroom for showering (not to mention a bathtub).

I guess this was the case in rural America as well during this time.

In the big cities here, a showering room was probably more common, but even then about 50 people had to share it with each other - considering the overcrowded housing conditions at that time.

Nowadays, you will find option 3 as the most common method still in allmost any developing country (think about all the worries of the terror teenies in "The World's strictest parents" when they find out that they have to do "cat-wash" instead of having a nice shower in the forests of the Congo ... Shower, but the occasional leisurely bath can be nice. I only tend to do it in hotels.

This is my answer as well. That's not to say that showers can't be relaxing.

I forget how short you need to keep your showers to be using less water than a tub bath, but it's shorter than a lot of people's showers.

Showers, though I dislike them as well. Unless I build up a sweat from hard work or expect to have company I usually only need to have one every 5-20 days.

Yeah, dude... that's not enough.  You should shower at least every other day.  Again, you don't have to wash your hair every day but you need to at least get your creases washed or you'll start building up a layer of BSR that nobody wants to smell (Butt sweat residue)

Hey, now.  A little sensitivity please.  We do have a few posters here from France, after all.

Being liberated from the shackles of social norms and tradition isn't easy for others to accept! I think posters here may underestimate how radical I am in spite of the PM scores.
