A friend recently gave me a bootlegged copy of the latest version - I'd only ever played Civ 2 before - and I've been addicted, playing it about eight hours per day the last week or two.   Even staying up all night playing on the office computer and then 'going to work' the next day bright and early via.. never having left!

Anyone have any commentary on the game?  I'm doing rather well, but though I'm by far the biggest and most productive civilization on the board, we're just 'modernizing' (entering the modern era) and I suddenly find I have NO oil!  I fought two wars trying to grab some, but each time the conquered territory ended up being just short (by one hexagon!) of the targeted oil!  Now I fear my opponents are nearing Jet technology while I'm still stuck with only infantry and artillery (without oil).

Anyway quite enjoying the game.

I never was comfortable with the mandatory Steam, and stuck with Civ3 instead.  Nonetheless, I've been thinking about giving it another shot...

I love Civ V. I have clocked an embarrassing number of hours playing it. Recently I've been playing with some mods but since they don't allow mods for Mac not all of them work Sad

The American Civil War scenario was disappointing, I don't know about anyone else.

I too never went past 3, I don't think I'd want to pick up the latest--I'd like to pretend I have a life.  Hours spent playing were so so many.

Ha, you sound like a classic Civ player Smiley I've spent an embarrassing number of hours playing the Civilization series ("embarrassing" partly because one would expect someone who's spent as much time playing it as I have to be better at it...). Mostly Civilizations II and IV, although I have played III and V a couple of times each. I may or may not buy Civ V some time in the future; I've pretty much worn out my interest in Civ IV, as much as I've played it over the years.

Incidentally, browsing the Off-Topic board of the Civilization Fanatics Forum as a young adolescent is how I was introduced to the world of politics.

2 was great, 3 was excellent, 4 was superb. I shied away from 5 at first because it seemed like they were changing too much- hexes, only one unit per tile, the city state mechanic. I bought it during the last Steam sale but haven't had the chance to try it yet.

2 was the best. Every game should come with a "rules.txt" file that lets you change how it works. The way they let you make your own makes, scenarios, events and units was pretty nice as well. I haven't played it since then, however.

it's basically a program for buying, downloading, and playing computer games.

I despise Steam and it makes it strenuous to play because of the download and the long as hell intro. As for the game it isn't too bad, it doesn't want to play on my computer for some reason and after getting it to run I loose interest. But when it was new I loved it the barbarian fights were epic fun.

Civilization:Colonization is my favorite game of the series though. I got it in a CD with Civilzation 4 but I never was interested in that one.

I loved Civ back in the day, but I now prefer the Total War series, especially Empire: Total War

I would probably rank the original Colonization, from 1994 or so, as the #1 computer game of all time.  I still play it some to this day.

I still play Civ IV...heavily modded.  CiV V is fine, but I need the expansion packs for it still.
