So? Like the Beaver said, when you have that much money and you're that popular, you can get by with self-funding.

It's money that Warner won't be donating to Democrats in other, legitimately competitive races and won't be able to use in a future campaign. This is Republicans expanding the playing field onto Democratic turf; it cannot be spun as a positive for Democrats.

This isn't just Democratic turf, though. Virginia has been Warner Country for fourteen years. Even the push polls show Virginia voters don't really care about his more liberal votes - his Obamacare support makes him even more attractive to voters here. The impact will be negligible - Gillespie's probably using this to build up recog for 2017 or 2018.

Is Gillespie better than many think?

Trende says the race is between Lean and Likely D. A bit generous to Gillespie, IMO.

Wait, where are you getting that voters actually like Warner more because of his support for Obamacare?

The media is ridiculously idiotic about this race. Just because one of their favorite GOP hacks jumped in, they think he'll make it a race with the most popular politician in Virginia (who can also self fund!). He stands about as much of a chance as Wendy Davis.

It's basically the same as the media obsession with Huntsman; he's not as moderate as they hope he is, and he's not even a blip on the popularity radar. And no, he's not going to become a Dem, ever.

There's a Warner Bros joke here, but I can't think of one.

That's very big of [Old] Warner considering [Younger] Warner nearly cost him his job in 1996.

Losing in 1996 was the best thing that could've happened to Mark Warner.  If he'd won, he would've been knocked out in 2002, and his career would've likely been over.

Meh, Bill Clinton successfully cost GHWB his job in 1992, and look at them now.  Not every politician holds grudges.  Wink

Warner is very popular, so Sarvis will probably take from Gillespie if anyone.
