Let's say that McGovern doesn't survive the sudden momentum that Hubert Humphrey gets after winning the Pennsylvania and Ohio primaries, and the nomination again goes to Humphrey.  Does he do better or worse?

Humphrey/Nixon

No one could've beaten Nixon in 1972, which made the fact that he cheated all the more ridiculous. Why the hell did he cheat against McGovern anyway, who probably could've only got 45% against him, tops? He could've easily coasted to reelection, and instead had to unnecesarily create a scandal that brought him down.

Humphrey does better than McGovern (who wouldn't), but still loses by about 12 points.

Humphrey would lose Oregon, California, and Iowa; he'd carry West Virginia, Hawaii, and possibly New Jersey.

5-pt swing to Humphrey (excepting South Dakota)

7-pt swing drops CA & OR

9-pt swing drops MI, NY, and IA

I'd vote Humphrey, but Nixon would win, though it would be closer.

Humphrey would still win West Virginia; he was immensely popular there.  After he lost the 1960 primary to John Kennedy he'd win every single contest with his name on it in the state for the rest of his life.

I wouldn't rule out Connecticut and Hawaii either.

How did Humphrey manage to win Texas in 1968 anyway (considering he lost the election)?

He was LBJ's vice president.  The Texas voters were loyal and gave the state, albeit narrowly, to Humphrey.

Paranoia.  The same paranoia that drove Clinton to steal the FBI files of 900 Reublicans.

The small town Democratic machines held many rural counties in line for Humphrey. If RFK had been the nominee, LBJ would have opposed him and he would have lost Texas by at least 3-5 points.
