What can you do with $12 million dollars?

I think that's enough to post a few threads on the subject, at least.

If they file paperwork to gain services, how is that automatic enrollment?

How is it not? Do you have anything legitimate to contribute to these pieces of legislation, or did you just run for Senate to ask inane questions and slow the whole process down?

It is a legitimate question.

I object to Senator TNF's confusing amendment, seeing as he has no interest in explaining it.

Nay

Could any one of you voting "Aye" please explain what this amendment means?  And maybe an estimate of how much it will cost?

Aye

The amendment automatically enrolls people in Nixcome when they apply to a welfare service run by Atlasia. What shua is misunderstanding here is that the first instance of paperwork is in reference to filing for a non-BIG form of aid, whereupon enrollment into Nixcome is automatic. They can opt out with additional paperwork.

Thank you, Tyrion. That clears things up for me somewhat. Still, it sounds like a confusing process just to opt out of BIG and I do not understand why we would want to do that.

No, I mean if we have all these more people signing up for Nixcome, how much is that going to cost?

Nixcome doesn't cost significantly more than the amalgamation of other forms of welfare, iirc.

A GM estimate is probably available from Griffin for the bill with maximum enrollment if one searches hard enough. Either way, this latest "concern" is a non-issue, unless you want people to remain uninformed that they have a right to enroll in the basic income program because you want to "waste less money". Roll Eyes

You and your eyerolls may prefer to remain completely and blissfully unaware and uninterested in the cost of the policies you vote for and consider it a "non-issue."  I am not so sure that's a good long term strategy.

I'd like this entered into the record for reference:

I would like to know how many people are enrolling on the Basic Income program since his creation?

OFFICIAL ESTIMATE

As of December 2013, 17 million households (15%) are eligible for the Basic Income Guarantee.

Among those 17 million households, 1.2 million (7%) have opted for the Basic Income Guarantee since its inception in October. Survey data published by the Department of Social Welfare suggests that many eligible recipients perceive the option as a risk, and are reluctant to be among the first to opt out of other benefits, such as public housing. Furthermore, nearly 60% of eligible households were unaware of the existence of the program (although this is down from 75% at the beginning of November). Among enrolled households, the average annual benefit is $7500. So far, enrolled households tend to be somewhat better off than households that have not enrolled, and are more likely to have at least one member working part time.

The Department of Social Welfare forecasts that total spending on the Basic Income Guarantee will reach between $15 and $20 billion in its first year, and expects enrollment to double to 2.5 million within the next twelve months. As of now, the effect of the program on other social spending remains unclear, although the Office of Food and Nutrition Services recorded a slight decline in food stamps issued during November.

Yankee, can debate continue for the 24 hours between the UC motion and the vote?  I might be amenable to that...

It's possible that this bill will cost us money, or it's possible that it will save money in the long run.  I think at this point it makes sense to give the Basic Income program the best chance we can to succeed, since we've already passed it and I'm not interested in a repeal.
But I'm going to vote against this bill, for a different reason after looking at the original legislation.  The purpose of the Social Welfare application process should be to help people get the services they need that best fit their situation.  For some people this will mean the Basic Income program. For others, it will not.  They may not know when they come in to get services what fits their situation best.  That is why, hopefully, there are people to guide them through that process. I don't see the point of automatically enrolling someone in anything they didn't ask for, while meanwhile they or their family members may lose other benefits by their enrollment. If this were just a bill educating the public, I would support it, but it isn't, and I wonder if for the people who need detailed information most on the benefits and drawbacks of the program are going to get it when there's this push toward directing them into it.
