The basic standards that he upheld, if nothing else, make him look awfully good compared to certain folks nowadays, but we would do well not to forget that from any sort of leftist point of view (and most centrist and some rightist ones) he was still by objective measures, insofar as such are ever really possible, an HP.

He was pretty fascist in the beginning of his lifetime, but in the end, despite being pretty conservative, he had a great interview program and I'm thankful for his big debates that I enjoy seeing in the meantime . So, I'll be kind and give him FF...

This guy has a positive approval rating? Though maybe not surprising, considering how he is frequently misportrayed - even Democrats often says stuff like "this is not the Party of Buckley" or that he was a "moderate".

He was a Franco-supporting, Pinochet-loving, McCarthyist, gay-bashing racist. He was also a science denier and a supporter of intelligent design.
Clearly a Horrible Person.

He was very articulate though, I guess that is something. Tongue

David Foster Wallace's parodic attack on him in The Girl With Curious Hair is hilarious.

He did give us this class moment right here:

My opinion, neutral. If it was about Dick Cavett or Norman Mailer I would give one. I surprisingly like one of those two.

What were these basic standards? He did denounce the insane JB Society, but that seems a very low bar.

Lean HP, but nowhere near as bad as many of his contemporaries.

It's interesting how 'enemy' figures of the past are often presented as being much more reasonable than those of the present.
