Mayor de Blasio noted that he has been to Italy and his habit of using a fork and knife is a hat tip to his ancestral homeland - http://mobile.nytimes.com/2014/01/11/nyregion/de-blasio-skewered-for-eating-pizza-with-utensils.html?referrer=

Chaos ensues.

New York is not Italy. You pick up a slice and take a bite.

What? I've never once used forks and knives to eat pizza. By the slice is the normal way to do it, whether in Italy or anywhere else.

I eat pizza with a knife and fork when I'm in a restaurant or so. Not at home with a take-away.

I've always eaten pizza with a knife and fork. Back in the day I would eat buffalo wings with a knife and fork though.

I use a fork and knife for sandwiches and some other things but never dared for wings. You, sir, are a hero.

I've been to plenty of pizzerie in Italy. I think my experience should be taken into account in this debate, no?

Sometimes I eat Snickers with a knife and fork, but generally not pizza unless it's a really deep dish.

Not when you're wrong. And you clearly haven't eaten much around Naples, the birthplace.

I was just about to say that this might be a North/South, or even specifically Piedmont/Mezzogiorno, thing. Where are de Blasio's people from?

My main experience is with Calabria though. Maybe it's a typically Neapolitan thing? I seem to recall De Blasio is from somewhere around there.

De Blasio's maternal grandparents were from Sant'Agata de' Goti in the Province of Benevento

I was going to say that as well but, as Antonio noted, he has strong roots (but not strong enough apparently) in Real Italy.

And yes, unsurprisingly, De Blasio's family is from Southern Italy specifically Campania.

I prefer to use a pizza cutter, then tend to the rest with a fork, but have eaten pizza before the way Mayor de Blasio did. I didn't realize this is actually considered a problem by anyone. xD

Phil, I think I'm with you on this, but I want to make sure: What are your thoughts on the proper use of cheese?

Then you must not have gone to an actual Italian restaurant ever in your life. Which is kind of sad.

It's about 50/50 here.

I sometimes eat it with my hands, sometimes with knife and fork.

Even in Pizzerias, people are split.

It really depends on the rigidity of the pizza you eat.

If the pizza piece is heavily loaded with stuff, especially in the front, the stuff on the front could fall down on your pants/shirt for example.

This is when I mostly use knife/fork.

Also, if you don't want to get oily fingers (for example if you need to use your mobile phone) - I use knife/fork.

If the pizza has a good rigidity, with medium/low stuff on it - I usually always eat it with my hands.

Phil, I think I'm with you on this, but I want to make sure: What are your thoughts on the proper use of cheese?

What in the name of God does "proper use of cheese" mean? What is the context? Cheese related to pizza or in general like grated Parmesan on pasta?

Guys, I do want you to know, in Naples especially, there is such thing as a pizza you can eat with your hands but it's a small thing you eat as street food. And in many delicious cases, the pizza is folded up so the sauce is inside. It's almost like a sandwich.
