New Gallup Poll shows that self-identified liberals are up to 23% of Adults and 43% among Democrats.

Liberals are now the largest group of Democrats and that is all adults, when you drill down to primary voters (and especially caucus voters) I suspect the numbers are even higher.

During a GOP primary the candidates all try and out "conservative" each other. Remember how Mitt Romney described himself as a "severe conservative." But Democrats have avoided saying "liberal" it like the plague, some choosing to describe themselves as "progressive" instead. But could a primary opponent from the left goad Hillary to declare if she is a "liberal". Imagine someone like Schwietzer saying in a debate "I am proud to be a liberal, what about you Hillary? Are you proud to be a liberal?"

What would she say?

I think Clinton would avoid "liberal" and try to stick to "moderate" or "centrist".

It is true that Hillary prefers to use "progressive" and that was what she did when she was asked if she was a "liberal" back in 2008 at a debate. I was just thinking that maybe with how now "liberal" is becoming less of a bad word (especially among Dems) that a challenger from the left can try and make an issue out of Hillary refusing to identify herself with the largest group of Dems.

Yeah, Hillary was already calling herself a Progressive back in2007/2008, and Progressive just means a more left-leaning Liberal.

Progressive isn't as toxic yet, so democrats may try to "out-progressive" each other.

That didn't sound grammatically correct.

I doubt it. Very few Democrats call themselves liberals, even those who ARE liberals.

I once again agree with my good friend from Pennsylvania on here. I, too, doubt any of the potential 2016 Democratic candidates would even call themselves a liberal if they were asked in a debate. Give them credit, Republicans have successfully demonized the word liberal, which is somewhat ironic seeing as how liberal is only two letters short of liberty, and liberty is what the Republican/Tea Party allegedly stands for.

I doubt it.  Maybe in 2020 if the trend continues.
