I'm having my German Shepherd put down. It hurts a lot.

So even though I haven't been pleased with the way things have been going here lately, I guess I'm thankful that it has distracted me a little from Real Life.

Yeah, this is the second time I've gone through something like this. The last time was in 2004 with a yellow lab that I grew up with. That was almost unbearably painful. I think I'm better prepared to deal with this situation, emotionally and otherwise, especially since I've known that this was coming for a while now. Still very tough though. I don't think I'll be sober tomorrow night.

I couldn't be with my 18 year old cat (who had helped me get through my father's death) when it was her time, and it was heartbreaking. But I went with my grandmother's cat who was also 18, and I sat with her all the way through.

It's hard, but if they're unwell and they're in pain, it's the kindest and most compassionate thing to do. However much you might want to rip your own heart out.
