I've been reading about Islamic theology lately, and I've been reading about Ibadi Islam, which some people claim is descended from the Kharawij sect. It seems, however, that the Ibadi themselves disagree (although it seems that Kharijites had a bad rap, so it might be a PR thing). What do our religious experts here think?

I'd say on the basis of first impressions that both the Ibadi and Khawarij derive from a proto-Khawarij group that was called Khawarij, but that both groups evolved in considerably different ways from the proto-Khawarij and thus I'd consider the early Khawarij and later Khawarij different sects sharing the same name.  So whether you consider the Ibadi to be Khawarij depends upon which Khawarij you are referring to.
