The geniuses who run the Multnomah County Republican Party in Multnomah County, Oregon are honoring Martin Luther King Jr and Abraham Lincoln by raffling off a rifle in their honor.

From the MCP website ...

Portland, OR January 13, 2014: Multnomah Country Republicans recognize the incredible time of year we are in. In successive months to start the year, we celebrate the legacy of two great Republicans who demonstrated leadership and courage that all of us still lean on today: Martin Luther King, Jr and Abraham Lincoln. In celebrating these two men, and the denial of the rights they fought so hard against, the Multnomah County Republican Party announces that we have started our third raffle for an AR-15 rifle (or handgun of the winner’s choice). The drawing will be held at our Lincoln Day Dinner on February 15th, 2014. Tickets are once again $10 apiece, or 12 for $100, and there is a hard cap of 500 tickets in the raffle.

Notably, both honorees are associated with gun violence. In fact, Dr. King was shot to death with a 30-06 Remington Game-master.

And it gets better! Because doesn't it always? The keynote speaker will be none other than Rafael Cruz, father of Sen. Ted Cruz (R) of Texas.

You do realize that both Martin Luther King, Jr. and Abraham Lincoln owned guns, right?

I still say we need a thread for recreational outrage....maybe even an entire forum, there is plenty of it around here.

This isn't a huge story or anything, it's just sort of stupid to auction of a rifle to honor people who were shot, and MLK was shot with a rifle. I'm not even seeing the significance of auctioning off a rifle in honor of either men, it's not like they are icons for gun rights or something. Some things are just stupid, not outrageous, but just plain stupid and this is one of them.

It is dumb, but there should be no big uproar over it.  We have such bigger problems than this.

Amazingly, I agree with this... It's idiotic but we have bigger idiots to worry about, like the Kardashians.

Again, MLK owned guns himself... this is a non-issue.

What's your point?

True.

But your problems may be related.

Yes, because black voters care about this instead of urban issues, poverty, and the institutionalized racism of the war on drugs....

It's almost as tacky as raffling cocaine to honor Whitney Houston.

So, let me get this straight: You seriously believe that black voters think about this, and not the many, many other reasons (healthcare, urban issues, etc) that they have legitimate policy disagreements with the Republicans on?

Believe it or not blacks do think about more than one thing at a time... It's not an either or situation, and the birtherism, baseless attack on Shirley Sherrod, and the auctioning of a rifle to celebrate MLK day all contribute to black voters turning away from the Republican party.

Hey but like I said, no need to argue.  We'll just let the polls do the talking.

The GOP needs to up its game when it comes to black outreach. And we need to do that by changing certain issue positions, not by running token black candidates. Sure, that worked when we ran Allen West in 2010 here in FL-22, and some idiots in my party think that will repeat itself.

Rand Paul has been very good on reaching out on issues like DC Statehood (more of an issue for African Americans in DC, and not nationwide of course) and the war on drugs. States like Mississippi and South Carolina are seeing their black populations increase IIRC, and that could make these states swing states by 2032 in the same way that GA will be one in 2016.

But to imply that black voters make their decision to vote Democratic not on the issues that affect them, but rather the President's skin color and an auction involving a gun is ludicrous.

This certainly isn't an issue anyone is losing sleep over, it's just a silly story. Plenty of black voters care about those issues, but the Republican Party doesn't. When is the last time you heard a Republican discuss urban issues?

Discuss the issues, not each other.

It's tone-deaf, but clearly done with good intentions and not malice. Not really an issue.

Edit: Although they unfortunately continue to peddle the myth that MLK was a Republican.

the only thing outrageous about this is that they think MLK was a Republican.

MLK Jr. never did express a personal preference one way on the other.  Yet I think it would not be unfair to say that up till around 1960, his inclinations were towards the Republicans. However the maneuvers both parties took on civil rights meant that he likely was Democratic in sympathy by the end of his life.  Hence it would make as much sense for Republicans to claim MLK as it would for the Democrats to claim Reagan because of his political preferences early in life.
