2008 Presidential CANDIDATES OF THE WEEK #3 (3/17/05 - 3/24/05)
Democrat: Senator John D. "Jay" Rockefeller IV (West Virginia)
Bio:
Senator Jay Rockefeller has proudly served the people of West Virginia for almost 40 years. In 1964, Rockefeller first came to West Virginia as a 27-year-old VISTA volunteer serving in the small mining community of Emmons. West Virginia has been his home ever since. Working with the residents of Emmons to improve the community through projects such as building a community center and library, constructing a park, and lobbying the county school board to put a bus stop in Emmons, changed Jay Rockefeller’s life forever.

For each candidate…
1.) Will they run?
2.) Can they receive their party’s nomination?
3.) How would they do in the general election?
4.) Who would win in a head to head dual between this week’s candidates? (Map's?!?!?)
5.) What is your overall assessment of both candidate?

1) Santorum will Run, Rockefeller will not.
2) Santorum-perhaps, Rockefeller-no.
3) Santorum- 50/50 chance, Rockefeller-snowball's chance
4) Santorum with 53% of vote.
5) Santorum is a bit too conservative for some.
Rockefeller is too liberal for most.

)
5.
Rockefeller: excellent. Santorum: very good.

1) Rockefeller no Santorum if he survives relection
2) Rockefeller no Santorum doubtful
3) Both are perceived as too extreme
4) Santorum 295-243
5) Both parties could do better. Rockefeller would be too easy to paint with the "L" word. Santorum is the only candidate not named Bush or Clinton that would bring out the die hards of both parties.

I understand that Rockefelled is very liberal, but how does he survive re-election in West Virginia? West Virginia is fairly populist and I imagine they wouldnt put up with a socially liberal politician very long.

5.) What is your overall assessment of both candidate
1) Santorum might; Rockefeller doubtful
2) Santorum better-than-average chance; Rockefeller slight chance -- One word might hinder both of them -- SENATOR
3) Santorum would do quite well against Hillary Clinton or John Kerry, but would struggle against a younger candidate like John Edwards, Evan Bayh, or Bill Richardson
Rockefeller would get beaten like a rented mule out at the ballot box. He would lose like Bob Dole in 1996 against Incumbent President Bill Clinton. In Rocky's case, the election would be decided as soon as Rocky got the nomination.
4) Santorum would win in a landslide because he's closer to the main stream than Rocky. Santorum would get over 290 and possibly over 300.
5) Santorum is probably a wee bit conservative, but thats good.
Rocky is way too liberal and too out of touch with the main stream.

He'd get 5 more eV's than Kerry would, as he would carry WV; get a slight 1% pV boost throughout the South and Midwest and maybe a 2% pV boost throughout the Rust-belt. Of course he'd lose 1% in the West.
He'd be a good VP to lockup WV.

1.
The third Senator from Virginia, likely not
Rockefeller probably not
2. Both could definitely win the nomination
3. They'd both have a reasonable chance in the general election
4. Rockefeller takes WV, OH, NV, IA, and NM, while losing PA, giving him a 273-265 victory over Santorum.
5. Santorum is rather right-wing, Rockefeller is a moderate.

1.) Rockefeller- no, Santorum-yes, if he wins reelection, which I will bet against.
2.) Yes, both could
3.) I think they both be hard pressed to break out of the state alignment of 2000 and 2004, although Rockefeller would do well in WV; I think Santorum would lose Penn in this matchup. I give the edge to Rockefeller because, to me, he comes across as more mature and Presidential
4.) I give Rockefeller the Kerry states plus WV, NM, Nev, Iowa, and Ohio; that's 294-244 for "Rocky"
5.) Again, Rockefeller has more maturity and a pragmatic demeanor, Santorum, possibly more charismatic, although it doesn't charm me. I think we Dems would have an easier time painting Santorum as an extremist than we have since 1964. I think Rockefeller would make a great candidate, but I don't expect him to run. I expect Santorum will be a paid lobbyist by 2008, having lost his reelection bid to Casey.
PS Is that the worst picture of Rockefeller you could find or what???

1) Rockefeller - No. Santorum - If re-elected, yes.
2) Yes for both.
3) Santorum would receive around the same amount as Bush did in '04. Rockefeller - not so sure.
4) Santorum wins.
5) Rockefeller - rather weak. Could pull in WV for the Dems but not much else. Santorum - good candidate. Brings in PA and possibly other states (Wisconsin, for example).

Why would West Virginia voters elect pro-gun-control Rockefeller when they voted against Gore for the same position on this hot-button issue?

It's one thing to keep re-electing a Senator who ladles pork into your state (and no state get more pork per capita than does WV), but you don't elect him to the Presidency.

3.) Santorum: Poor, too far to the radical right. Rockefeller: Poor, too old.
4.)
