Of the readings in the Revised Common Lectionary for 1 December 2013 (First Sunday in Advent) I choose to reflect on Romans 13:11-14. (I'm filling in with reflections on that portion of the lectionary that occurred before I started doing these at the start of 2014.)

Our salvation is nearer now than we first believed Romans 13:11b

Paul was bring more truthful than he knew when he wrote this passage. He wrote in the expectation that the Kingdom of God would soon be inaugurated by the Second Coming.  Yet the Kingdom of God is already at hand and has always been at hand.  But man finds it difficult to accept that.  Jesus came not to inaugurate the Kingdom but to reveal it.
