Not voting because I haven't seen 12 Years a Slave yet, just wondering what people think.

12 Years a Slave is heart wrenching and stomach churning.

No. That's gratuitous.  I've seen both. Go see 12 Years.

Haven't seen the second, would like to. Django was great but obviously a completely different film.

Two completely different movies so there's no point comparing them.

Well they're both about slavery.

...and that's about it. That would be like comparing Training Day and Ride Along.

I think comparing them is worthwhile precisely because the differences between them are instructive. You could argue that this is a difference of a white director versus a black director or just Tarantino versus not-Tarantino but the way in which 12 Years a Slave is heart-wrenching and stomach-churning encourages more identification with Solomon Northup than Django Unchained does with any of its characters--not in a nebulous 'relatability' sense but just in terms of how the movie is shot, edited, acted, and presented to the audience.

12 Years a Slave. Tarantino has drifted into a cartoonish self parody for me.

That implies his movies were never over the top ridiculous to begin with.

Great artists can mix it up. It was unique 20 years ago but he has been playing the same note, only louder for so long.  I still think Tarantino does some good dialog and scenes, but his whole narrative structure and lack of balance lately make me feel nothing for his characters.

Both are excellent movies (although 12 Years a Slave is infinitely better), both are about slavery, and both definitely deserved to win Best Picture in their respective years.  That is where the similarities end.  It is like comparing Schindler's List to Inglourious Basterds.  They are so different that there isn't really much of a point trying to compare them.  You really should see 12 Years a Slave though, BTRD.

I obviously do plan on seeing 12 Years a Slave sometime.

However I'd be surprised if it has any scenes that top (yeah spoilers obviously if you somehow haven't seen it yet) this or this.

Depends on what you mean by 'top'. There are no scenes that top those on their own terms, but there are scenes that are far more affecting in other ways.

I loved both but 12 Years a Slave is literally something that will be put in time capsules.

That seems kind of pointless. They can just watch it in the future in whatever format they use, just as we can watch Gone with the Wind or Citizen Kane on DVD/Blu-Ray.
